Hi all, I have a 2005 C6 coupe, 6speed manual with 11.5k miles, always garaged and kept in during the winter. I started getting the occasional message 'service column lock' about 6 months ago, but didn't worry about it because it would always start after a few tries. Now I have been stranded at work several times and gotten a ride home. Once I came back in the evening, the car started right up. I hardly drive it now because it seems to happen about 50% of the time.
Anyway I had it into the dealership today to address the issue along with a recall and oil change. Dealership said they need to replace the column lock. $500+ bucks in parts and with tax and labor to install it a grand total of $1000.
What ends up happening to everyone else with this problem? Do you pay the price and get it fixed or persuade the dealership to fix it for free? This seems like a common issue on the forums, why isn't this a recall? Does replacing the column lock fix the problem forever or is this a recurring problem?
Thank you for any responses or suggestions on my situation in advance.
Battery is maybe two months old. Replaced the battery thinking it would help the issue and it hasn't. At first the car would start after a few tries when the column lock message came up but now I have to wait over a half hr or get a ride home and come back to get it. It has gotten progressively worse to the point of not being driveable.
However if the dealership is going to replace the crappy column lock with a new crappy column lock. Is this problem ever going to be fixed?
