Default Oil change

My 2005 was due for an oil change, and I did it myself!
This may not sound too challanging to some of you, but it was a bit harder than I thought.
The Mobil 1 was on sale at Walmart for $21 for 5 quarts, the 6th quart was 6.76, the filter $3.46, but I needed a new catch pan, so it was $42 total.
My trusty metal ramps needed lots of wood of various sizes in front to not catch the front air dam. Got out my saw to make those fit.
Once up on the ramps, I could see my oil drain bolt had been abused by the dealer, 1/2 of it was rounded off. This made getting the right sized socket (13 mm after a process of elimination) need to be hammered on.
While the oil drained, I went to the dealer and bought a new bolt (only $4.10 I was surprised), and saw it was 15 mm. The threaded part is the same, has the built in blue rubber seal, just now it's larger at the end. A good idea from looking at my old one.
Well, of course, none of my oil filter cap wrenches fit the filter, so off for a search. Kragen has one that fits for $5, and works.
So 4 hours later, my oil is changed.
Next time I can do it a bit quicker I'll bet.
Oh, and the "oil life" reset procedure takes a bit of reading to find.
Just display it, and hold reset for a few seconds.

Don't worry - I have a drawer full of them and with every new vehicle none of the old ones fit. I have 2 or 3 adjustable type tools around for such situations.

Good job. It takes a few to learn the tricks. I've been doing it longer than most on this forum have been around. I have it down to about 20 minuets. I have a complete set of cap wrenches but I prefer a medal strap wrench. Don't forget to fill the filter before installing it.

Way to go ED! Next time it will be a piece of cake. My tool box is also full of various types of filter wrenches that I have accumulated over years of different car ownerships. I have such a selection that my more adventurous neighbors come over to find one for their filter.

It's good therapy. I have been driving for 50 years (), and have had a "professional" change only four times. Enjoy!

Sounds like one of my adventures when it comes to working on cars. Seems like every time I decide to modify a car it turns into an ordeal and not as simple as it should be.

Oil changes I've got down though lol. However the first time I changed the oil in my mustang when I was 16 I failed to notice the gasket on the filter stuck to the block. So when I started it the car promptly blew several quarts of oil on the ground.

I use the pierce/drain/rotate with a screwdriver method. A little messy, but has worked for me ever since cars started using spin-on filters.
