Default beefy cam ?'s

So im getting ready to upgrade the cam in my car, i will just have basic bolt ons, intake and exhaust and cam, possibly intake mani down the road, Do i have to upgrade the springs/retainers when i put a big cam in?

What cam or cams are most people running for good hp number gains? I would like a pretty aggresive sounding cam, also i have read that some people have lost timing chains due to additional stress after cam install, is this something i should be worried about happening to my car?

how hard is the install? how much is a good kit? how many wheel hp would i expect from this mod alone? thanks

Give ECS a call...they can get you set up and will give you what you’re looking for with long term reliability.

well I went with England Green they are a fourn vender love the cam I got a whiplash with everything needed. if you have an Auto you will need a smaller cam though. you do need springs and pushrods you will want to change out your stock timing chain I went with a double roller. you can go with the C5R katech chain also I hear it's a very stong chain. but if you go with a double roller you can't do a high flow oil pump as I found out there isn't enough room behind the timing chain cover for both. But you will have to do a little trimming of the cover with the double roller.

I did a vrx5 cam and car feels great. used stock timing chain (mmost people do in the lsx world) but if you have the cash then its never a bad idea my car had low milage though.

if i was going to buy a new one, use the c5r chain.

did a NICE set of springs and retainers, and push rods too.

How much did all that cost you? Any before/after dyno numbers?

LS2 or LS3?

I've got a LS2 with Spinmonster's 228/232 XER 114+2 and I love it. Sounds mean and has great driveability.

When i did the 1 7/8th headers, Hi flow cated X-pipe, and Magnaflow rears.
car made 374rwhp

did the underrive pully, VRX5 cam, springs, retainers, push rods, and a blackwing intake.

car made 436rwhp. same dyno.

so it picked up 62rwhp. I did it myself, with the help of a friend.

cam was 300, springs where 250, push rods 100, pully 200.

A proven 10 sec package and the car is still on the road after several years of hard running..I have the same package as others and none have failed to my knowledge. ECS race what they sell and the owners have the parts in their daily driven corvettes Take a look at their site and the prices are listed including parts...nothing is hidden and you now what you will be paying for before the work is done.

well when I did the cam on mine I only had 25,000 miles on it. I have a brand new timing chain sitting around that I got with the cam but I decided to go double roller instead. I also have a high flow oil pump that I can't use with the double roller timing chain. But I'm no expert but I would change it as it's a cheap insurance.

well I was told the stock oil pump will be fine the double roller was perfered. guess if I went with the C5R chain I would have been able to use the oil pump. but I wanted to double roller for strenth. I've only put about 2000 miles on the car since I installed everything. and all seams fine. and it made 503 hp and about 430 in tq. that's on the LS3 with underdrive pulley and ported intake and throttle body.

Damn those are way good numbers for your mods, how much hp does the underdrive pulley provide?

i used the stock timing chain, car had 25k on it?

i did a large cam on an ls1 when it had 42k on it and the car is still racing everyday with 132k on it. timeing chains dont break often, and normally its a failer of the chain itself, not becasue more where and tear. also using the stock one, its all ready streaked the most it is going to. just depends on milage to me.

There are a million cams out there to chose from. The best way to do it is to have one custom ground for you. Cost is the same, why guess when you can have what you want the first time. We can spec a cam to meet your needs and take the guess work out of it.

You will need to change valve springs, seats and seal depending on which spring kit you get... or not at all if you go with PAC springs

You will need new pushrods as well.

The timing chain is a good idea, some people just get a stronger chain, others go with a whole new timing set and even a double roller for protection....

Oil pump is for insurance and since you are right there it gets done more often than not. We use the Melling HV pump and double roller timing sets, you have to clearance things to make it work.

(the two above things OP and TC are about $265 for the Melling HV and an N-motion double roller timing set. Cheap money when you consider what could happen if either of those failed. But it does add costs.

Install isn't that hard but you need the proper tools and a clean works space..
