My fob is acting up. I get the error message on the dash that says fob not present. I have the fob in my pocket and I just put a new battery in. The car wont start because its not recognizing the fob. So i put the fob in its holder on the glovebox and it recognizes it and the car will start. ANy thoughts? I nly have 1 fob and im going to buy another right now.
Possibly the battery you just bought has the gridded negative surface. The correct one needs to have that surface smooth. It's due to the tiny spring contacts in the fob that have trouble making full electrical connection.
I've had it act up before as well. I believe it is due to outside radio interference because it pulled the same stunt with a new battery. ON Star was totally useless. Do a search, there are other threads on this, but no good answers.
the originally battery that was in there was almost new. I just tried outting a different one in to see if it was the battery. Its 100% not the battery.
oddly enough I have a magnetic money clip... and when the fob is in the pocket with the money clip it doesnt get recognized.... make sure you dont have anything like that in your pocket.. i imagine a cell phone could have the same effect
Try the spare fob. If it works, there's something wrong with the first one.
If neither fob is recognized, you may have a radio interference problem. My C6 would only intermittently recognize any of my fobs whenever it was parked in my garage. I switched off the breaker to the garage door opener, and the problem instantly went away.
In my case, the receiver in the door opener was jamming fob communication.
Take all the electric gizmos out of your pockets/glovebox/center console/trunk, drive to a few different locations, and attempt to restart the car at each one. If the fobs still aren't being seen, you could have a RDCLR problem.
I have to wear a pager for work. I'm finding that if the fob is on the same side as my pager it doesn't work. So, cell phone or ipod or anything like that next to the fob?
Try placing the FOB close to the area around the radio, HVAC control panel. When mine acts up thats all I have to do works fine. There are receivers for the ignition switch and both doors. The area where they will pick up the passive fob is pretty small and is easily corrupted.
<Imagining Bill C waving his crotch around the radio/HVAC area with fob in pocket>
Seriously though when I have trouble with mine it is usually getting into the car that is the problem. But if the battery is really low I need to have the fob in my right pocket for it to start.

That would be a good trick! I normaly dont put my fob in my pocket. I toss it in the cup holder.
