Default Tunnel insulation. Any ideas???

Hey everyone,

I work on my car a lot and this year I've had the luxury of having to take out my complete driveline from the torque tube on back. Every time I'm working in the area above the torque tube I get fiberglass into my hands from the insulation. If you've ever had fiberglass on you skin and penitrate your pores, you'd know what i'm talking about. The insulation looks to be fiberglass covered with an aluminum foil. Not only does it get in my skin but it's falling apart and is getting messing.

So i'm looking to remove all that crap and replace it with an insulation that's just as good or better.

Any ideas on who sells a kit for this or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If you're looking for heat insulation, Elite makes ceramic coated tunnel plates that also reduce the amount of torsional flex in the chassis. I have one and they work.

Summit sells tunnel plate insulation stuff. I put it in mine when I installed new pilot bearing. Makes noticable difference in dd, but at the track, tunnel plate still gets pretty hot. I also have the 3/8 coated tunnel plate but it made zero difference in controlling heat. HTH.

I'm not looking for something to put on my tunnel plate or a coated tunnel plate. I'm looking for something to replace the existing insulation that's already on the tunnel. It can be seen once you take out the tunnel plate.

LOWES and HOME DEPOT sell a product called FROSTKING. Its about 3/16" thick, has a soft rubber foam insulation and foil on one side. It is slightly sticky on the foam side and clings to any clean surface (you can remove it if you ever wanted to. I does a hell of a job under the carpets rejecting road noise and heat. I have my drive train out of my C5 Z now and I plan on installing it in the tunnel area to help reduce heat.
They sell another product "REFLECTEX" that is basically a foil covered bubble wrap. I placed it on the inside against the tunnel and on top of the tunnel and it significantly lessen the heat from the tunnel.

The stuff is in heating & pluming and is fairly inexpensive.

I will send you some pictures of it installed in my Z and 71 coupe later tonight after I get home

Use aluminum (sp) foil tape to seal the edges and any holes you may have.

Go to the Lowes website and type in "Frost King". It'll come up. Looks interesting.
