Default Service column lock WTF???

Ok so here goes. Two days ago my 2005 6 speed did not want to start and it displayed "service column lock" in the DIC. I did not know what was happenening as this was the first time and I thought It was the battery so I jump started it and surprisingly it started. While I was driving to my destination it continued to display "service column lock" in the DIC. When It came time for me to leave I tried to start the car and again same thing so I thought ok my battery is shot. I tried to jump start it again and It would not start. I left the car alone overnight came back to it, jump started it and it started. I drove it straight to my local chevy dealer. (thank god im still under warranty) Just got a call from the dealer today and he told me that he ordered me part # 15915003 Column actuator module and he told me that I need a new battery. I went crazy last night researching this issue on the forum and it seems like a whole lot of other 2005 mn6 owners have had the same problem. I also read here on the forum that a lot of people that had this problem have changed the part mentioned above and also changed part # 88963402 Column lock actuator. The chevy tech told me that he would be able to change this also if he can find a TSB. So I figured I would ask my forum brothers and sisters. Please help I am so frustrated and now I kind have lost trust in my car because I have also read that this has happened to others more than once. Thnak You in Advance.

Yup! Been there done that, it sucks! Make sure they replace the "column lock" not just the module. I don't know if there is a TSB, but that IS the problem. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-c...s-for-you.html

Also get the sensor for Active Handling fixed while they are in there, I think there was either a recall or a TSB.

I replaced the column lock myself and it works every time now. Here's a thread on my ordeal. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-c...lumn-lock.html

Thanks man I did read your posts and many more last night but the dealer tech told me that he just couldnt swap the column lock without it being bad or being on a tsb IDK this is so frustrating. And yeah they are doing the active handling recall while the car is in.

There is a service recall on the "service column lock" u dont need to be under warranty for this and if u didnt get the recall notice in the mail yet u will soon. Good luck

Are You sure it is for the 2005 because I am aware that there is a recall but that is for the 2004 and below. If it is for the 2005 c6 do you have a recall # or some type of reference that I can give my chevy dealer.

There is a bypass relay available for the C5 which takes care of the problem (I installed one on my C5). Not aware of a recall on the actuator or module for the C6 unfortunately.

I'm positive the dealer replaced the actuator on my C6 because the unlocking noise was different with the original actuator. I think it now sounds the same as the original, and coincidentally it now still gives me SCL messages. How does the actuator module fit into this whole mess?

I had this same issue with a dead battery...tried to start the car and just heard click and then the car gave me the "service column lock" message. I charged the battery and it went away and have not seen it again in about a year.

I wouldn't worry about it. I have a feeling that is a default error when the car is having an issue starting...

There is no recall for the C6, only the C5. This seems to be an ongoing issue with the 05 c6 mn6 (only c6 with column lock). First, check the battery. If it tests good or it is replaced with another, then look at the column lock. You should hear a "zip" coming from it with a good battery. If no "zip", then chances are that something is wrong with the column lock.

A weak or dying battery might not have enough juice to unlock the column lock. Maybe that's why you got the "service column lock" message.

Or maybe the column lock needs to be replaced and it's just a coincidence that you also need a new battery. Yep, I'd be skeptical.

Maybe you already know...
-- When you park, you must shift to reverse before shutdown or you'll kill the battery.
-- C6 charging system is marginal. It takes about a half-hour of driving to replace the energy used to start the car.
-- C6 battery is small. Infrequent use and/or short trips will kill it. And once it dies, it never fully recovers (less of a problem with if you have a deep-discharge battery like an Optima Yellow Top).
-- A weak/dying battery can cause lots of weird electrical problems.
-- A good battery maintainer is a VERY wise precaution especially for a weekend driver. This will keep your battery charged and extend its life.
-- Be sure your new battery is well-charged.
-- Some 05's suffered from Dead Battery Syndrome. It's fixed by a reflash at the dealer. This is old news, so yours was probably already fixed. Just a heads-up.

More than you'll ever want to know about battery-related issues:

If they are replacing everything under warranty let them do it. If your paying only replace the battery and I'm sure your service column lock message will disappear.

I had the SCL issue with my 05 MN6 car that i got jan 2010 w/60k miles. I replaced the column lock itself. No more problems. It took about 3 hours - the part was about $300 if i remember correctly.
It is NOT the module it is the lock itself.
To get it to start until you get it fixxed - disconnect the battery it will reset the column lock
and it will probley start. Mine did.
