I went to fill gas this morning, and while the guy in front of me was complimenting me on my car, I pressed the 87 Octane button on the pump. I realized after putting in a little more than 4.5 gallons, so I switched to 92 Octane for the last 9.8 gallons until she was full...
Having said that, I figure the octane average to be around 90. Should I add some Octane Booster to the mix, or do you guys think I'll be OK?
I'm deathly afraid of detonation, and a new build forced rather than planed...

Your thoughts?
fogetaboutit!
The stock motor will run fine even on 87. Your motors anti-knock system will prevent any damage. All you lose is about 10 HP at the top end. Heck 91 is the highest we generally see around here.
The heads in my Z06 have been shaved to increase compression to 11:1 - and run the highest octane to prevent detonation, have not had the ooops moment yet.
But good to know that the car will auto-magiclly detect a lower octane/detonation and adjust timing.
Don't drive it. Drain the mixture and refill with the 92. (just kidding) I have only used 87 for almost 6 years and it still runs great with no pinging.
I'd drive it easy until the low octane is gone. No way would I depend on the knock sensors to save my motor. Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, and friendly IRS agents yes....all good. Not so much with the motor compensating......
Since your Vette has FI, I would stay out of boost until you've used up this tank of gas (just to be safe). So drive around the island a couple of times!

That's what I was thinking...be sure to stay out of boost and use up that tank. I am OCD about making sure I hit the right octane button when I fill up, 'cause I like me some boost

Here is why its ok:
The PCM has two ignition advance tables. One called Hi-Octane and the other called low-octane based on load and RPM.
While there is no method for the PCM to actually know what octane is in the tank, when it senses knock, it will quickly pull back timing by a preset amount. If the knock remains, it will then reference the low-octane table ignition table in anticipation of knock to keep it under control.
That makes sense, I was just concerned as my car is highly modded and blown which is tuned for 92 Octane. I just wanted to avoid a detonation and, well we all know the rest.
I think I'll go buy a little container of Octane boost, putt a couple ounces in there just for piece of mind. I'll run the car, staying our of boost till it hits 1/2 tank, refill with 92, then go back to my evil ways.
As always, thanks to all for their input, you guys are the best!

I don't know what your mods are or what you tune is but you should be ok.
However, your tuner could have made the high and low octane tables identical, thus disabling this feature. I am not saying he did, but this is possible.
You have a C6 (05) same as me, and just having a C6 makes us a lot more fortunate than many.. so as Our Distinguished President would want.. Lets both you & ME help him with "CHANGE" ....
We will Give our cars to some less fortunate immigrant, maybe one who snuck over the border illegally... as our leader Mr. O'Bama says there should be CHANGE
Well you & I can be leaders for O'Bama et-al and show the illegal border crossers that we all "LOVE" each other & we will GIVE them our C6 because we put in the wrong gas..
Then he will get the rest of his relatives and help pick fruit on our 100 acre farm getting us enough $$ to buy 2 new ZR1's
Seeee Lets all be friends....I love Nancy Pelocie (sp) and Pres O'Bama, Rama, Ding Dong... and want to help him...
PS "Don't worry about the gas... just drive it easy until you are at 1/4 tank, & fill er up with 93 & you'll be fine !!
Blown cars need the higher octane and are tuned specifically for it. This is the same reason why blown cars that get into the higher HP numbers (600+ whp) on stock (non-forged) engines add methanol injection. The meth adds octane that makes the fuel equivalent to race gas. Spying Beast, your car has a blower...it's nowhere near stock as far as tuning goes.
I'd fear detonation if I got into boost with 87 octane, especially if you're putting down 600whp or so without meth injection.

Keith, that little container of octane booster you get at autozone or wherever in Island Paradise is going to to practically nothing. just drive around in no boost until about half empty and fill up again. like has been suggested

Sounds like an echo of the best advice. I'll take it, just to be certain.
At 650whp with the heads, cam, blower combo, I KNOW it was tuned for 92 Octane. Knowing now that that little $10.00 bottle of Octane Booster did nothing to my levels, I'll heed your advice and just drain the tank touring the island next week. It really shouldn't be that hard at 11MPG....
Thanks again fellas, it's a good thing I didn't take faith in that octane booster!

Tell you what Keith, since I am retired, plenty time on my hands and not that far from your house. Just drop your car off my house and I will be more than happy to drive it easily until the tank is close to empty and than fill it back up with 92 for ya!
