how would one know that their catalytic converter(s) have gone bad. i hear a constant low volume metallic clanging when i drive(sounds like it is coming from engine area around my feet) ...nothing during start up or idle and the sound is not there all the time.
the sound is more prevalent after the car has warmed up, but i have heard it when it is cold as well.
the more gas i give it, the louder the sound. could it be engine knock, pinging, exhaust leak, cats?
is there a heat shield that could be loose....i looked under the car and did not find anything really loose.
I'd look for something obvious like the ehxaust retaining springs about midway of the car. If they are loose you get a rattling sound. Probably not it but it's worth a look see.

any ideas would be appreciated.
If the cats are coming apart, the computer should pick it up from the downstream O2s. You could always pull the downpipes and have a look in there. That said, it's probably something else.
Check your harmonic balancer. Sometimes the runout gets so bad they start banging in to the front cover.
