Default Tire Sensors

I got the dreaded "Service Tire Monitor" message yesterday on my 4.5 year old 2006 C6. It didn't go away so I started looking at options. I ended up going to Discount Tire and they installed a new OEM sensor for $56. The $56 was actually slightly less than buying from a discount GM dealer, but the real kicker is the $56 included installation and programming. The new sensor works great.

Good information. I'm sure all of us will have this issue in time.

I had the same light come on a month ago. Took it to the dealer where I bought it (06 C6) and they said it was not working because I had replaced the factory radio and all systems ran through that. I call BS on that. So I took it to another dealer and they told me they could not get to the sensor because they did not have a machine to take my tires off my HRE rims. More BS!!! So I am stuck. I know Discount Tire had no problem putting the new shoes on.

When I got my DR's on a spare set of wheels I got 2 sensors and purchased the trigger tool for like $ 50.00. As it turns out I put the new tires on and they worked fine without having to trigger them in . I thought
the tool was necessary for assigning new sensors for the TPS Module. ?

Your new sensors are not recognized by the TPMS unless they are programmed into it.

Just because there are pressures displayed by the DIC does not mean they are working. You are seeing the last known pressures from your old sensors.

Your TPMS memory can hold 4 sensor ID#s. The ID# is transmitted in the data stream along with the tire pressure, and the TPMS only displays the pressure of a tire if it recognizes the ID# as being one of the 4 in its memory. Your new sensors are just like if you park next to a dozen other C6s - i.e., the pressure in the DRs and the pressures in all those other C6s will not display in your DIC.

You MUST program the sensors into the TPMS for the correct pressure to display.

If you drive the car for a while you'll see that the pressures will not increase as the tires warm up, and you'll eventually get indications that the TPMS is not getting signals from them - you'll probably get "Right Rear xx psi" and "Left Rear xx psi".

Great explanation I was probably reading the last known value
in the regular tires and it appeared that it was reading the new sensors
correctly when it was not.

I'll keep looking but figured I'd dig up a thread to get an answer.

I had noticed my left front sensor never seemed to change. In fact, it's probably never worked since discount tire installed them on my RE-11's almost two years ago.

Since I never got a warning light and I always use a gauge anyway I just let it go.

Well, I pulled my battery to do some work on the car this past weekend, and on my way to work today, I couldn't go into competition mode or turn AH off, and the tire pressure read 0psi for the front left. There is no "service tpms" message though, nor CEL or even the low tire pressure warning.

So before I go back to discount and let them scratch up my rims and rocker panel some more, how to do I try reprogramming the TPMS myself?

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they simply forgot to put one in that tire, or used a broken one. I'll have a great time convincing them to give me a new one for free though.

You can purchase a programmer. But you may ask Discount Tire to program it for free first.
