Default Brake Rotors

Recently purchased a base C6. Needs brake rotors. Any sugestions of a good rotor(s) to install without breaking the bank? Thanks

Sir, these last a long time and are very lite. I use GM pads, with no problems.

I looked at your profile, but it doesn't say anything about your car.

If you have a Z51 or an F55 with the large brake option, you won't have quite as many options.

But, if you have the small brake rotors, you've got a lot to chose from - and you could think about upgrading to larger sized OE Z51 rotors or Baer Eradispeed +2 to fill up the rear wheel better.

So....first you've got to know what sized the rotors you have on your car now are.

So is it okay to to replace the standard rotors on a base coupe with the larger cross drilled rotors? Asking because I am considering buying a 2011 coupe base 1LT.

Thanks for the reply Bob, I have an '05 3LT, 6 speed, base coupe with the small rotors. I would like to upgrade to the larger slotted rotors. Can this be done without changing the calipers?

Both of you can put on larger rotors. When you do you'll need either new brackets or bracket extensions.

p4snow, it sounds like what you want is possibly Z51 rotors - they are cross drilled. Take a look at forum vendor Gene Culley's info below (it's on his website at http://gmpartshouse.com ):

Z51 Brake Upgrade Kit

89060328 (2) – Front Brake Rotors
89060329 (2) – Rear Brake Rotors
88964166 (2) – Front Brake Caliper Bracket
88964167 (2) – Rear Brake Caliper Bracket

Total kit with all four rotors and caliper brackets - $561.00
Use part number c6z51brakes on the website to order this kit.
You can see the kit comes with Z51 brackets - they just mount the caliper a slight bit farther out so they fit with the larger diameter rotors. They're a very easy mod - you just have to remove the wheel and the caliper (2 large bolts) to get the old rotor off and the new one on. You won't have to open any brake lines, so no bleeding is required.

The Z51 rotors are larger in diameter than the base C6 rotors:
  • Base.....front 12.8 inch rear 12 inch
  • Z51......front 13.4 inch rear 13 inch

The Z51 rotors (and the cross drilled rotors on the Z06 and GS) are not side-specific, that is they use left-side rotors on both sides of the car. Most cross drilled or slotted rotors are different for the right and left side of the car, but not the OE cross drilled rotors.

Corby, if you want larger slotted rotors you'll have less options. I had a 2005 (my brother-in-law bought it a couple years ago) and I put Baer Eradispeed rotors on it. I got 2-piece drilled&slotted rotors - same size in the front, plus 2 on the rear (14 inch vs. the 12 inch stock size). Here are a couple pics:

Front

Rear

The rear Eradispeeds come with a bracket extension to move your stock calipers out far enough to work with the larger diameter rotors.

I'm sure there are some Z51 sized slotted rotors out there for you put on, and all you'd need is to get the stock Z51 caliper brackets to move the stock calipers out to work with them.

Good luck, and pics when you get the new rotors on!!!

I wouldn't recommend a GM rotor, or any drilled rotor, unless you're after looks. GM rotors aren't directional (with regards to the vents). I'd advise you look at DBA rotors. There's a forum vendor here that can hook you up. The AFX are nice if you want two-piece rotors, and DBA makes two-piece rotors as well.

I can't speak for all DBA models....But, I wouldn't recommend the 4000s if you plan to track your car. I have not been having good luck with them. Although their customer service if fantastic.

I'm surprised to hear this and honestly have always heard great things about DBA rotors. I actually used them on my other car with excellent results. I personally have Stoptech calipers and two-piece rotors on my C6.

I use DBA 4000 rotors for the track on my Z06. I've had 2 sets and they have been great!!
