Unable to Install A6 Shifter Knob
I am trying to install a DSVettes shift **** on my 2008 C6 with A6.
The **** was surprisingly easy to remove, as per various posts that I have read. I turned the boot ring to 1pm, pulled up on the ****, and it just popped right off. However, I can't get the new one back on.
First I slide the **** down the shaft, then I try to get the boot plastic retaining ring into position. It just won't go up, probably because the 2 vertical plastic clips on the **** are slightly spread out, and will not allow the ring to move up into place. I keep trying to twist the boot to 1 pm, and move the ring up into place onto the ****, but it's a no go.
So, I removed the ****, and pull up on the boot as high as it will go, put the ring through the ****, and THEN try sliding the **** down onto the shaft. This doesn't work either, probably because the 2 vertical plastic clips on the **** are being held too tightly by the ring, and can't open enough to fit onto the shaft.
I did try the original **** as well - with no luck. So it has to be someting I am doing wrong.
What am I doing wrong? Is the **** supposed to slide into position FIRST, and then the boot retaining ring slipped on? Or, get the boot retaining ring on FIRST, and THEN slip the **** down the shaft? Logically it seems like it should be the former, but I just don't know.
Thanks,

Fortunately I had marked the original noon position of the Ring with a small piece of masking tape.
My problem was that I had not pushed the Shifter **** down far enough, and this did not allow the Ring to slide up. The only way I could get the DSVettes Shifter **** to go down far enough, was to tap it down with the palm of my hand.
Once it was in place, I tried to remove the Shifter **** to allow me to install the new Shifter Boot. However, it did not want to come back out.
The only way I could get the Shifter **** out was to lift the GM Boot up over the Shifter ****, cut the tie wrap, drop the Ring as low as it would go, cut the Ring with a sharp knife, and remove the Ring entirely. Once the Ring is removed, the 2 plastic vertical tabs are exposed, and can be easily spread with a small screw driver. Removal of the **** is then no problem.
As per Gene Culley, you cannot purchase a Ring or Shifter Boot from GM. You have to buy the whole Shifter assembly. So that left me 2 choices: I could put a tie wrap around the 2 plastic vertical tabs, or just drop the Shifter **** into place and leave it at that.
I chose the latter. It takes considerable force to lift the Shifter **** out, so I left it without a Ring. And with no Ring, the DSVettes Boot can go up higher into the base of the Shifter ****, which I think looks better.
By the way, I met Gerardo & Lino at Carlisle, where I ordered the goodies. They delivered as promised, and I am very pleased. I highly recommend DSVettes.
