I just finished building a "poor man's M2W" and thought I would share the project with the forum. The attached file is a description of what I did. I just finished, and it seems to be working great. I'll be keeping an eye on it and will let others know if i find any bugs. So far, so good, though I just put it in and the car is brand new (2011 GS, took Museum Delivery on the 22nd, waiting on photos to post).
The total project cost is about $16. Those of you with better electronic skills are welcome to suggest mods and improvements.
Excellent. I took my controller and used double sided servo tape to stick it on the center console. I really do like to hit the loud button! The cardboard box scares me a little, if that thing got hot (probably won't though) it could light the box on fire. I know, I'm paranoid about things like that.
Excellent write up! This is great for those who love to DIY. I had the official M2W controller, and ended up swapping it to a diy dead pedal switch with and LED light.
I did almost the exact same thing, just not wireless. I simply wired an LED rocker switch, ran the wire under the console, and put in the existing hole where the hands-free mic normally is. (My car isn't equipped with it, so it was just an empty hole anyway.)
I dug up my multimeter and measured the current draw. With the receiver jumpered for the “toggle” mode, the circuit draws 6mA with the relay de-energized (mild mode). When the relay is energized the circuit draws over 60mA. Therefore it is important to make sure the system is set up as described and set to “mild” when the car is parked. This will keep the relay de-energized and min current draw.
The other way to make sure this won't drain your battery is to power the receiver from an un-used fuse location that is only on when the engine is running.
I'm posting a revised attachment to reflect this. If any one builds one and has a question, PM me and I'll be happy to respond.
