It bolts to your transmission but you need to do some work to your cradle and build a mount.

Sparo2 did a great write up, contact him for information on his latest mount. He has a new version 2 that is better.

It's a good mod as you can sell your 3:42 gears to an auto guy and offset the cost of the built c5 rear, which are much cheaper. You blow up your 05 rear and it's scrap. Replace it before it blows. Wish someone had told me that.

Sorry I misread what you wrote.

You need a new transmission rear plate to mount the 06 rear to your 05 transmission. They are about $400 IIRC. The side covers will mount to your cradle just fine.

But when I was shopping last year, a 06+ rear costs about 3x as much as a C5 rear.

Not that anyone would do it because it's already pretty strong but what about putting a C5 rear in a 2006 (or newer) C6 A6?
I wonder what kind of modifications/alterations have to be made to make that work.

I think a c5 or 05 c6 rear trans plate would be necessary, and of course the cradle mod and bracket.

It's not as far fetched as it sounds, if you are an avid racer, the c5 cores are 1/3 the price and proven to be pretty strong. I've got scores of 1.5's and even a 1.4 out of mine.
