Default Differences between front and rear hubs?

Just received 4 ZR1 hubs to upgrade my GS hubs. However they all look like rear hubs as they have splines. I always thought it made no difference and rear hubs can be used in the front.

The shop manual has a caution (16-27) that claims that the rear hub requires the axle and retaining nut to reach its required load support. So using the rear on the front will be at risk of failure.

What experience do you folks have?

Hmmmm.......

Take a look at this info from the Mid America Motorworks site:

Mid America Motorworks is proud to introduce this C5 & C6 (Up to 2008) Corvette SKF Racing Hub. SKF manufactures the hub unit for the ultimate Corvette, the new C6 ZR1 and is offering the same technology to the C5 & C6 Corvette owner......

.....Our C5 & C6 Corvette SKF Racing Hubs will work on the front and rear of any C5 or 2005-2008 C6 Corvette......
I'm not sure, but I think the hubs are the same front and rear (that statement above seems to confirm that).

And I also thought that since 2009 the Z06, ZR1, and the GS (since its introduction in the 2010 model year) have all used the same hubs.

So.....are you sure you don't already have the ZR1 hubs???

On my Saturn Sky the front hubs have splines. The RF and LR are the same as are the LF and RR. I don't know if the Vette hubs are that different.

Before the SKF hubs this is what would happen if you used a rear hub in the front and thus the warning in the SM.

The GS hubs are not the same part number front and rear. Front GS hubs are 19208046 and the rears are 19208048.

Dont have the ZR1 hub part number with me at work but it is not the same as either of these. ZR1 hubs are basically the same design as the aftermarket SKFs but have different spline counts and speed sensors.

This Rock Auto site doesn't give the definitive answer (it's not an official GM site), but it seems to indicate that the ZR1 (and Z06 with the Z07 option) use the same hub front and rear, and it says they are GM Part# 25933291:

https://www.rockauto.com/dbphp/x,car..._FI_E_Hub.html

The FE4 suspension is on the Z06, and the Z06/GS brakes are the J56.

The ZR1 suspension is the FE5, and the ZR1/Z07 carbon-ceramic brakes are the J57 option.

I didn't have much luck getting any info when I plugged that Part# into a couple GM parts sites.

I have not tried to do what you are doing so I am not 100% sure if it will go.

1. ZR1 uses an active hub wheel bearing and the wheel speed sensor is different. You can note this as the ZR1 have a yellow wiring pig tail, and all of the standard hubs on the 1997-2008 cars use a grey or black pig tail. I thought all were the same after 2009 when they went to Bosch ABS systems from Dephi.

2. Z06/ZR1 use a larger half shaft and the spline count is different. I do not know if they upgraded the base cars or not. Be sure to check this before you go real far.

3. ZR1 hubs are built by SKF and are the same as you see for the upgraded 1997-2008 aftermarket pieces that we, and many others sell. They are the same front and rear as it is a ball bearing, not a taper bearing.

With that being said the ZR1 uses the same hub at all four corners. Prior to that, yes the base cars did have a different front and rear bearing. The fronts did not have the splines to run a half shaft through.

I would check a few other things out first. I'm pretty sure all 2010 cars should be using the active sensors though. It's color coded so make sure it matches.

Looks like the consensus is that I can upgrade the hubs in my 2010 Grand Sport to the SKF design by simply installing:

2010 Z06/ZR1 Hubs, same part number all 4 corners, speed sensors are compatible with 2010 GS stock, spline counts are different than GS stock.

2010 Z06 Axles, spline counts match the Z06/ZR1 hubs. Note ZR1 axles are not the same length left to right because of differences in the trans/diff between ZR1 and Z06. The diff end of the axles are the same Z06 to GS.

...

Plan to do the work in the next few weeks so I will let everyone know if it does not go well.

It is a real challenge getting the 3 torx fasteners out of the hub.

Use a little bit of heat and make sure you have the best quality T55 Torx bit around...actually make sure you have a few around.

Exactly! My car has never in been in snow or salt, or significant rain for that matter, and it was a real challenge to get those bolts out. Steel and aluminum don't mix....

What are they like in 10 years of winter driving!
