Default Cheap rear sticky setup for track only use

Before anyone says it, I used the search button. Just looking for a little guidance on a cheap tire setup for my 06 z51 setup please.

Now that I got that out of the way, I'm looking to go the cheapo route on a set of rear sticky tires for my car. I don't want to be frustrated running 2.0+ 60 foot times on my street tires and would like to get rid of wheel hop so I don't break anything. The car will see the track once a month as I work weekends and it's tough for me to take time off. These tires will NEVER see the street. What will fit and what do you suggest? I'll be happy with a sub 1.8 60'. I looked into the 19'' M/T and the traction-monster mod, but I don't feel comfortable driving a drag radial on the street. Looking for cheap, lightweight, and won't need any modifications to fit on the car. Also will it set off any sensors?

Greg

The primary factors in good 60' times and controlling wheel hop are launch technique and practice. I would spend some time at the dragstrip running the car in stock form before changing tires. I'm assuming by your post you haven't done this.

I believe the cheapest effective setup might be C5 17" wagon wheels
with 275/40-17 M/T ET Streets.

You can find a pair of wheels for about $150 and the Tires are about $205 each from Jegs or Summit

The Spinmonster traction solution is your best bet I believe. You don't need to worry about driving them on the street...they handle fine. Also, no adjustments needed, no spacers, etc. You probably don't want to drive DR tires in the rain (my car doesn't see rain). I get a "low tire" message on the dash, but I did not re-program my tire sensors.

I use Mickey Thompson ET Street II tires in 305/35/18 and they are my everyday tire, not just for racing.

You ***umed wrong Yoda. Which part of my signature didn't give away that I was not still stock?

Thanks wally and everyone else, I found a nice set of wagon wheels with a set of slicks that I may pull the trigger on.

Powerlabs, are you still in NJ? I'm friends with Chris from AKA rally if that would help with a discount , I believe you know him?

Hi Greg,

Yeah, of course I know Chris! I hung out with him and the AKA crew at their Applebees dinners on Thursday or Friday (can't remember which) a couple of times. Does he give you crap for driving a 'Vette? Most of those guys seem to think if you don't drive a 4000+lbs euro luxo-barge you don't have a good car...
Anyways, I paid $700 shipped (from 'Vegas) for these wheels, which I only wanted for one race. I am living in Michigan now, so I was hoping to see 700 shipped from them. I'll sell them for $600 shipped if you want them; shipping will run me around 90 dollars.

Here is the for sale thread: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-p...c6-c6-z51.html

will certainly let you know in a few days as I am currently looking at a set locally. Chris is good people, he's good friends with my brother so that's how I know him. Lol for some reason he likes my vette, but I do get pesky e39 m5's trying to race me on a weekly basis..literally. Tons of euros in the area, Eurotech is not too far from me so I guess a lot of tuner cars come out of that shop? The wagons will surely be my wheel of choice for the track now so thanks for the reply. You plan on doing this years rally? I know nothing is set but last time I talked to him he mentioned he had something cooking up.

Hahahah... No one ever tried to race me there. They probably knew better Those M5s (the V10 ones included) couldn't even keep up with that bone stock C6 Z I co-drove on the last rally...
I'd consider doing another AKA, it really depends on who is going. I had a good time on the last one but I was also thinking about trying one of the other rallies too; its always cool to meet new people...

Yoda? Who the hell are you? Jabba the hut? You asked a question and I was trying to help. If you had actually done a proper search you would know that changing your rear tires will not eliminate wheel hop and will not guarrantee sub 2.0 60' times.

No need to get angry, you made a snappy comment and got one back. I asked a question on what cheap sticky tire setup people are running, which part of your post answered that question?

Wasn't trying to be snappy in any way. Your profile shows your mods but not your drag racing experience so I was suggesting you practice on stock tires first. Was not trying to offend you. Guys come on here all the time wanting instant results.

I don't care if you're John Force, going to the track on stock tires with a stroker motor is not only stupid, it's dangerous. There is a much better chance of losing control without the proper tire. I would recommend a MT or Hoosier drag radial. Ive run them both and they both work well. I currently run the MT 315/45/16's but for your car the 275/40/17's would be great

At BEST you will spin your way to some unimpressive ETs with street tires. At worse you will crash. You put your Corvette on the wall at the drag strip and its coming out of your pocket. Your insurance company will laugh at you if you try to collect insurance on a vehicle crashed while racing.

Exact reason I'm sticking with the drag radial. I don't want to get to wobbly further down the track. The hoosier drag radials should hook up pretty good, hopefully can make this track day happen Sunday. It's snowing pretty good here in Northern NJ.

its really not the slicks, its the runflats on the front, i have had the car very hard to keep straight with drs and runflats up front, went to skinnies and staight as an arrow

Do you know why that is? I've heard it before but it doesn't make sense to me... The skinnies have a lot less grip than the run flats, so why does the car track better with them?
