Default Question about swapping halfshafts...

This might be a dumb question, but I can't picture it.....do you have to drain the diff to swap the halfshafts out?

Thanks in advance.

No need to drain diff.

Just drop the spindle by disconnecting the upper ball joint and you should be able to pull the shaft out from the rear of the hub and then with a large screw driver or pry bar gently pry the shaft from the diff housing. Then slide out careful not to drop.

Forgot, you may need to disconnect the lower end of the shock from the control arm to get enough movement.

Thanks a lot for confirming, that's pretty much how imagined the process would go.

While I've got the topic open, 2 more questions...

1) Do I need new axle nuts or can I re-use?

2) I've heard the C6 shafts have a snap ring or something holding them in that the C5 shafts don't have. What happenes to that when I pry the old one out of the diff? Do I simply slide the new C5 shafts back in and ignore that?

thanks again.

I see no issue in reusing the axle nuts. Have done so several times.

I don't know for sure about the C5 shafts but I think they are the same as the C6 and do have a retainer ring. No problems with a gentle pry to remove and a push to install.

I just finished changing the hubs on my 2010 Grand Sport to 2010 Z06 shafts so I could upgrade to the higher performance (SKF staggered bearing) hubs used on a 2010 Z06/ZR1. Needed to change the shafts because the spline count on the Z06 axle is different that C6/Grand Sport.

And thanks once again for the info.
