oil temp to high?

Yesterday, I drove 45 miles to get new tires on my Z06. Outside temp was 50 degrees. The max I saw the oil temp get up to was 146 degrees while crusing at 65 MPH, but it took almost 30 minutes to achieve that temp. This is what I've seen for the past three years. In the summer (85-95 degrees) I might see 170-175 degrees while crusing down the highway. Because of the oil also serving as a means to carry away heat from the engine, my coolant temp runs at 192 degrees crusing down the highway. That huge oil cooler that the Z06 has, it works, but I wish I could get the oil up a little hotter in the winter.

You could cover your cooler in cardboard to reduce airflow to it.

You can over cool the trans oil. It is a hydraulic system and needs a minimum temp for proper operation. I don't have a clue exactly what that is on my A6 but I am pretty sure it is 140 or better. My Duramax won't lock the converter up until the coolant gets to approximately 165. Under load towing my trans temp would mirror the coolant temp. Too big a trans cooler is bad news in cold weather. Later! Frank

Mine seems to rum about 100 which is the temp the Viscosity is speced at

I am inclined to think that that the oil temp should be a little higher than the others. It would worry me if it weren't at least 210-220 at operation, just to burn off moisture that will get into the system. My Coolant warning comes on at 235 I know this from the flushing of the system and during burping. As for tranny it has been around 175-185 what bothers me I got a free oil change at my dealer during some warranty work and my oil pressure dropped about 10psi. I was sure it was always over 40psi and higher now idles at 32-38 psi.

I have a question my car has been running around 190-220 depending on conditions of driving or how far i drive. 224 is the highest it is ever gotten by me just letting car sit there running for half hour to see how hot it would get! I do have the 2006 A6 Z51 and i thought that Z51's came with an external oil pump or is it built into the radiator? If i do have a built in oil cooler what are my best options for upgrading it or adding an external one? I would also like to upgrade the tranny cooler at same time if i can? could i just get one of those expensive 1k+ radiators that have all those connections for the coolers? Are the coolers attached to aftermarket radiator like ron davis or dewitts one a good enough upgrade?
where do i look? what brands? options?

Have a 2010 GS A6. Highway at 80 mls/h in manual mode and 4th gear gives 260-270 after 10-15 minutes and still getting higher. Find it rather on the high side.
Does the 2010 GS A6 has the same small oil cooler as the former Z51s?
Does it make sense to get the Z52 M6 oil cooler w/o dry sump in?
Take care

Simply don't drive on the highway at 80+mph in 4th gear for 10-15 minutes.
5th and 6th were installed in your A6 for a good reason.

I am used to driving my cars at the German Autobahn for longer periods (2 hours +) at 150 to 170 mls/h. This gives you e.g. for my Porsche Carrera 2 hours + of 5000-6500 RPM. Max Oil Temp in this situation is around 240.
So going 15 min with the GS in 4th gear and 80 mls/h which might correspond to 4000-4500 RPM is really not too much.

Hey, imagine I know that...I did it (don't do it all so time, believe me) in order to have the engine rev at least at little bit for a longer period. A6 shifts very early in 6th which gives very low rev level but does not allow the engine to breath und "burn free" properly.

But at 80+mph I would likely use 5th gear instead of 6th and it's still got plenty of kick to it, not quite as much as 4th would of course but it will also run much cooler (oil, coolant and trans fluid) as well.

ok now my tranny temps are running from 200-225 depending on the stop and go in traffic. on the highway it stays at 180-185 depending on speed 70-80 mph. i did just add a stoker kit to my engine and ewp,ud pulley, and bigger cam a 234,242 cam but i am not even driving the car like i normal do i have been babying it around trying to keep temps down. is this ok temps? Oh i almost forgot i held off on putting in my yank 3600 because even after i added a b&m trans cooler to the radiator trans cooler the (14,400 btu unit) that was the temps i was seeing in normal driving so now im scared to put the yank in!
