Default Rev Limiter

Floored my LS2 C6 (Automatic) for the first time recently from 1st gear, was concentrating so much on steering the car and holding on I never looked at the HUD for RPM's, shifted into 2nd and then let off it, could I have overreved the engine? No engine noises or anything to cause concern but just wondering. Read that these engines have a rev limiter, would the limiter prevent the engine from overreving past red line and possibly damaging something? Thanks!

Yes, they have a limiter. You have work pretty hard to hurt them.

The limiter comes in right after redline, 6600 at most. It is not dramatic when it happens and it won't hurt anything. It cuts power and rpm drops for a half second or so. If you leave the gas on it'll just oscilate between about 6000 and 6600 in a relatively slow cycle, not the fast rap-rap-rap that you hear on limiters with a shorter cutout, but a slower vroom...vroom...vroom.

If you didnt notice anything it probably didn't hit the limiter. You can't miss it, it feels like you let off the gas. I don't think it's abusive to go to redline regularly, and though hitting the limiter is to be avoided cause it's sloppy, it won't hurt anything.

BTW the pic in my avatar did not trigger the limiter, but that is the exact spot where it happens. It's a frame from an accel video in which the camera was blocking the tach, so
I was shifting on sound (manual) and didn't know I had gotten within a hair of the limiter til I watched it.

Didn't feel anything like that at all, was so enjoying the pull through 1st and into 2nd I forgot about everything (including the landscaper truck I was quickly gaining on), I'll sleep better tonight knowing I didn't damage anything, Thanks for your replies!

If you were holding on for dear life with your LS2 auto, I suggest you never entertain the idea of trading it for a Z06.

PS- did you manually shift the transmission into secind gear or did the auto do it's shifting on it's own?

Thats what the car is made for. You aren't hurting it by flooring it through first and second in an auto. If that really scared you then I don't think you need to get a Z or SC....

I was just worried about overreving the engine but from what I'm reading, the rev limiter would prevent that. And I wasn't scared, at 61 years old it takes a little more than speed to scare me, LOL! This is my first Vet, had some movers when I was younger but never a Vet so I'm loving life right now. And the only reason I didn't consider a Z was living in New York and dealing with constant traffic, I didn't want a stick although there are times when I'd love to be shifting through the gears, maybe the next one will be a Z...thanks for the replies.
