Default $874 for a waterpump install

Does this sound right to you guys?? I think I am just irritated right now but when I took my C6 Vert in for an oil change I asked for a diagnostic and walked out with a $184 bill for oil change and diagnostic (their version of diagnostic was to measure the tires, brake pads, cooling system pressurization and battery) which did reveal that my water pump was weeping fluid and could blow at any minute. When they found the bad water pump they called me and told me it would be about $900 to fix the problem but they didn't have the pump in stock so it would take a couple of weeks. I refused because I wanted to investigate for myself the cost and didn't want my Vette there for a couple weeks waiting for the part. When I checked with GMpartshouse.com the cost of a water pump with gasket was $249!!! Now, the dealer said because fluid leaked on the A/C belt that had to be replaced also. I thought there was only one belt on the LS2. The topper to my long winded rant is that when I went to the DIC to look at my 100% readout for oil, it read 53%, the same as when I took it in!!! They didnt even reset my oil readout on the DIC. Grrrr!!!

I received similar, expensive quotes from dealers for a water pump. Independent garages were only a little less. In my case the pump seal blew big time, fortunately it happened at home, never detected a slow leak.

I ended up purchasing a new (not rebuilt) pump from Autozone for about $130 plus coolant and a few little things. Replaced it myself, total out of pocket was less than $160. Took me a few hours, could do it again in less than an hour.

Hope that helps.

Do it yourself or find a local mechanic. That is a rediculous price. That job shouldn't take any longer than an hour for someone that know what they are doing.

$900 to fix a W/P!!!
Last time I did a W/P on a 06 C6 I charged 1/2 that and that included the pump. If you're willing to tackle the job yourself do a search for a write-up. If you can't find one let me know and I'll create one for you. Should take you a few hrs give or take. If not, search around for better quotes. Just be careful of who does the work. Sometimes you get for what you pay for.

I think the OEM pump is $390. You can buy a cheapo from Autozone but I would go with OEM. I think it calls for 2 hours of labor or so. I would think it would be around $750 for dealer to do it.

If you're ok with a couple of bleeding knuckles, you should do it yourself. There isn't much room in there to work, but you can most likely handle it!

I understand the OEM water pumps are failing like clockwork every 30,000 miles. If this is true they are also "cheapos".

just did mine last weekend. I also changed my oil/filter, installed all new HID light bulbs, cleaned/lubed my poly Pfadt sway bar bushings, inspected suspension prior to race season, soldered on a new oil temp plug, adjusted a coilover, yada yada yada...

Took me a few hrs. I'd say 2 hrs start to finish for water pump only.

I paid $209 for my LS7 pump from Scoggin Dickey.

should be 2 hrs shop time + pump. I filtred my antifreeze and reused it ( it wasn't that old)

A/C belt IS seperate from the serp belt. Just wash them both in warm soapy water, let dry and reinstall. Fact is, unless they look shreaded or cracked, re-use them. Wifes L92 Denali has 87K on it and that serp belt looks fine.

oh yeah....look for another dealer to service your car. those guys are doubling the corvette tax on you

The new (not rebuilt) cheapo autozone pump I purchased looked almost exactly the same as the oem that came off. How many places cast these things?

Mine is a DD, so could not afford downtime and the reason I inquired about others doing it for me. After I finished I wondered why they charge so much given how easy it was to replace. I'd tackle it again without a doubt.

Unfortunately almost all my coolant went down the street to the ocean. Not by choice, what happened is I parked, turned off the engine and the old pump just blew the old coolant out while under pressure. I would never do that intentionally, if I had the choice I would have captured the old coolant. Not sure where to take old coolant if I had captured it though. Oil I know where to take for proper disposal, other fluids not so sure.

"pep girls" in my area will take oil and coolant. I can also take it to the county landfill and they have containers for oil and coolant. Your city / county might have similar.

DIY. It's a simple job and you will save $ big time. When my time comes I'm going to check out Edelbrock pumps.

And to think ... we used to pay $35 for a Chevy small block water pump back in the day.

And nobody ever thought about going to a dealership to get it replaced.

Times ... they are a changing

The retail on the water pump GM P/N 89018052 is $380.14. The labor is listed as 1.8 hrs. A total bill of $560.00 plus tax seems to be the most you should pay. Does anyone know if the retail auto stores will give you a core refund to help offset the cost?

And now you know why I will never buy another GM product in my lifetime. By the way, I'm sure that the rebuilt GM waterpump has a Made in China label on it.

I'm not mechanical...not at all. I'm sure that many owners are in the same situation---not everyone is a mechanic.

I'm sure a like FORD 5.o coyote water pump would have been just as expensive. now if you are talking about NOT buying GM because the Feds bailed their ***'s out..... then I agree with you on that one!!! My replacement for our GMC Denali XL is looking like its going to be a porshe cayenne (turbo?)

BTW, my pump had a "made in Canada" sticker on it. welcome to the 21st century. Capitalism has no international boundries.

true. But. any shade tree mechanic could swap out this pump. Hell, your local high school auto shop could do it. I'm sure they would LOVE to work on a Z06 Vs. swap a clutch in a honda.

Here is how it works...

1) up on jack stands
2) drain coolant
3) disconnect TB and inlet assembly
4) disconnect coolant hoses
5) take off serp belt
6) take off (6) fasteners
7) remove pump
8) remove tensioner off pump
8) Install new H2O assembly
9) 1st pass H2O pump belts ..11 ft/lbs
10) second pass ..15 ft lbs
11) re-assemble in reverse order.

I know we are becoming a nation of getting paid for "what we know" , but a little common sense and trial and error can save you a ton of $$$$$.

Additonally, you've just helped your local highschoolers learn a valuable tech trade. Maybe we can be an industrious country once again..

another thought: ( just like racing or HPDE your C6Z) If you can't afford to repair it/replace it .....you can't afford it.
