Default Oil

Ive got 50,000 miles on my C6 Z51 Manual. Ive always used the recommend oil - any thoughts about using something heavier? Its my DD and I usually put in a 1/4 pint every other month. Doesn't leak - just the shifting and stop and go fwy out here in LA.

I would stay with Mobil 1 5w-30. 1/4 pint is next to nothing. I see no reason to change.

At 50,000 miles it's just really getting broken in......stick with what has worked and no doubt will continue to work.

I would recommend:

Mobil 1 5w30
Mobil 1 0w30
Mobil 1 Racing 0w30

the regular M1 0w30 and 5w30 are GM approved

the racing one isnt GM approved because it isnt good for cats, but it has the strength of a thicker oil and a better additive package... Price is also double of what regular costs.

If you are back gearing in traffic ie using the engine to slow the car to save you brakes, you will burn some oil. A quarter pint in a month (milage?) is cheaper and easier to replace that brake pads. Keep using the recommended oil and don't worry.

Stick with the factory Mobil 1. I LOVE the oil threads that get started around here... unless you track the car all the time, there has never been any solid proof that the factory recommended oil is not sufficient.

Unless you're in a very cold climate, there is no need for a 0w30. Also, racing oils are not always good for use on street engines. True, they do have more zddp, but they typically lack additives and detergents that non-race engines need to fight against fuel dilution and moisture. Just because it says "racing" on it does not mean its better for your daily driven car as well.

M1 Racing for motorcycles is known for that. It doesnt have the additives that the non motorcycle oils have because of the clutch slip problems that would ensue.

Doing a some searching a while back lead me to the fact that M1 racing (the non motorcycle spec) is not recommended for street use because 1: it is bad for the cats 2: The US has a stricter standard on the amount of additives that go into oil than you see in other vehicles such as those in europe.

If they had an m1 racing 5w30 I would recommend that (it only comes in 0W30 and 0W50), but just because it is a 0W oil doesnt mean it is an oil tailored mainly for the cold. The oil has the strength of thicker stuff. The charts are right there on the mobil 1 website.

http://www.mobil.com/usa-english/mot...duct_guide.pdf

Lastly, I wouldnt recommend this oil for a DD because you would be spending 100 dollars per oil change, however I do recommend it for street cars that see hard use such as weekend fun cars.

Lingenfelter recommends 15W50 summer and 10W/30 in winter with their packages.
