Default Auto trans / shift problem! Help!

I have a 2005 DSO, that I take very good care of. I just got a shifting problem that I can't seem to solve.
Here's the scoop...
I went on a mountain drive (50 miles).. came back into town for a break and the car would not restart. I had to move the shifter into neutral and it would start. Got home and pulled into the garage (level). Put the car in park and it was still moving forward. Put in reverse.. same thing.. I was still going forward. Neutral also.

So I basically am in drive all the time. The car will not start up obviously. The shift **** will only go back to the "D" drive indicator.. it will not travel any further (down to 3,2 or 1). It almost seems as something somewhere has gotten loose or out of place for this to happen.

Here's what I've done... I suspected the shift mechanism... I removed the center console.. loosened the shifter bolts (4x) and can see underneath where it connects to a thick cable. Everything looks ok. I removed the leather boot cover and examined the inside while manipulating the shifter.. it all looks ok - it just doesn't go any further down than to Drive.

Without going any further.. I need some advice!

I am suspecting something else.. maybe the other end of the cable?

Does anyone have any ideas for me to check? I have some tech skills, but I am no master.

crawl underneith the car at the rear/drivers side and inspect the cable at the shift lever on the trans. There is an adjustment lock that looks like a T, see if its popped out like a turkey timer. Also inpect that area near the black bracket and see if the black shell is cracked.

Ok... so I went under the car to check the trans. I found the shift mechanism.. I was able to manipulate it both directions - without seeing any movement from the shifter in the car. I examined the area around the shift lever and did not see anything out of the ordinary. I did not see the adjustment thing that looks like a T. I also did not see any cracks or anything.
The cable still seems to have 'tension' in the car at the shifter, however, even when the shifter is in Park.. I was able to move the shift lever at the trans back and forth with relative ease (just the expected 'clicking' from position to position.

Any ideas?

Does this sound like the shift cable? If so, anyone change one on a c6? I see the c5 forum, but I get directed back here.

Yep, sounds like you need to swap the shifter cable from tranny linkage to bottom of shifter assembly under car. My C5 did this and I had to tilt my entire drivetrain down enough to get my little arms up in there and swap it. Good luck and buy a new cable not a used one.

Check under shifter. Where cable mounts to the tunnel/body and see if it came loose there. Or broke if it is still in place and the plastic part that the cable runs through broke it will let the cable bend.
