That link shows using toggle bolts, but really you can just pull the pins out and prop it open with whatever you want. Eventually it will retain the form on it's own.
It will make a dramatic difference in the temperature of air that is being fed into the K&N
Here's how I've done a couple for some friends. Instead of the toggle bolt, I used 1/4-20 allthread, some nuts and fender washers.
The threaded rod is 5-6" long. With the nuts screwed toward the center and the washers in place, push the shroud open and put one end of the rod through the hole in the shroud where you removed the pin, and the other end through the hole in the bumper plate. That props open the shroud. Now run the outside nuts away about equally from the center until the shroud opening is 2 1/2 to 3" wide. Then the other nut is simply used as a jam nut to keep the outside ones locked in place.
I'm not so sure I would actually refer to it as a CAI.

In my opinion, yes.
But I don't know if I'd go through the expense and hassle of swapping if you've already spent money on the K&N. If you're not looking for every last millisecond of straight line performance than it might just be easier to do the propped shroud mod shown above and call it a day.
