I just started to notice a whining noise when on the throttle of my 05 z51. Not just at highway speeds but pretty much anytime I am giving any gas above 30 mph or so. I've only had the car for about a month, or roughly 800 miles, most of which is spent at 35 mph and under for my commute to work and back. The shifter would rattle at higher speeds but now will rattle at lower speeds too.
The car only has 25k miles and has a DTE (Dynotech Engineering) rear end with 3.90 gears that were installed by a previous owner, when, I am not sure.
Do you think the rear end could be going out already or is this noise something that is common on aftermarket gears?
Update: I took the car in to Henderson Performance Technology today and gave Corey a ride to let him hear the noise. He said it sounds like it could be the diff or transmission.
We are going to start with flushing the fluids to see if it helps. If not, then we are going to start tearing things apart... I cannot imagine a rear end going out with only 25k miles on it though!?

If you're not low on fluid in your trans it's most likely your diff. The ring and pinion gets noisy. Also it's not how many miles the diff has but how it was built and used.
I am on my 3rd rear. All 3 were set up by the same guy at Rochester gears. All 3 developed exactly the same symptoms as you describe. He warrenteed it each time, I had to pay for the install again just the last time.
I even changed the dif housing this last time. I don't track the car and rarely get on it. I will go with RPM next time around. It's your dif. not the trans. As long as the whine isn't too noticeable you can probably keep it for a while and still have fun with it. Mine has been whining for over a year. Just waiting for my A6 to blow than I will do the dif also.

I have a DTE diff. almost two yrs old. I change the fluid every year and broke it in nice...I hope I will not develop the whine...hell I even drive it nice now.
Coming back from a movie just yesterday with the wife I took a corner a little fast and she said, is that your fun for the day....I said yup.

That is what I did when my 07 Z51 A6 Diff died at around 90,000 miles. Now I am well over 120,000 miles and still running strong.
