Default Removing Fuel Pump From Tank-Help

I'm in the middle of installing a dual fuel pump kit in an 06 ZO6 and I'm finding it nearly impossible to remove the OEM fuel pump module from the drivers side tank. I have been fighting with it for several hours tonight and just decided to walk away and rethink this. It seems the lower portion of the module is at least as wide if not wider than the top opening in the tank; as I work it up it will not get past the area where the three tabs are that hold the two sections together, in fact it is unclipping them as I work it around the perimeter. Is there some trick to this?

It's a biotch.

Try using a small screwdriver to (carefully) help pry it out.

Run a search for "how to replace a fuel pump" by Motorhead-47 (or old Motorhead, can't remember which) or a fuel pump post by eboggs. One of them describes how to remove. Basically, you have to trim away material from the opening sloping away as you get lower in the hole. I had to do that to mine as my assembly didn't want to cont out either. A good utility knife or dremmel will do the trick, but take away the bare minimum needed - maybe 0.060 around.

Hope that helps a bit.

I ran into the same problem. Do you have both lines of the return pipe assembly disconnected from the pump module? The one connection is a quick release and the other one is held in place by the brown clip that is easy to undo once you understand that it is released from the bottom of the clip (I can't see for sure in the photo). If you are past that part so that you don't have any resistance that's trying to pull the pump back into the tank, then the last part is to rotate the pump in either direction until you find a sweet spot that will allow the pump to be easily lifted up. It's kind of like the hole is slightly out of round. I did not find it necessary to dremel or pry anything. Just rotate in either direction and it should release and come right out.

I also had problems with the bucket coming unclipped from the top and it took a very small screw driver and lots of patience to get it snapped back together.

Make sure to pop the fuel level float off and let it fall into the tank for later retrieval as well. It will slide out one you find that sweet spot. It is a bear but you should not have to trim anything. My bucket actually popped loose when pulling mine out. That was a major PITA to get out.

Here's a link to the real problem with the neck of the tank. It deforms when they put on the metal fittings and the straight sides of the opening turn into a funnel shape and you need to clean up the edge a little for easy clearance.

Thanks for all the input everyone. After continuing to use the screwdriver method and to no avail, I took a utility knive and radiused the inside edge all the way around and then went back to working it out with a small screwdriver, after about and hour and a half I got it out. Now onto my fuel pump install. Thanks!
