Let me rephrase, how do you know when to clean (i.e rinsing, drying &re-oil). I realize enviroments vary, but if its not obviously dirty I was wondering if there was a general rule of thumb just for the sand/dirt/contaminates you cant see. I think I cleaned it last about 5k mi ago.
Thanks
Generally speaking , if you can't see the accumulated dirt, the filter still has the capacity to filter air adequately. When you can no longer see the element 's color, it's time for a clean and re oil.
Most of the aftermarket CAI's are for enhanced performance and not as great filters. They will filter out birds and small children. I run my aftermarket filter through my diswasher and then lightly oil about every 4,000 miles. Been doing this method for the last 20 years....without any problems!

Now if you lived in that area and had to return, how long do you think that dust would hang around on the steets and be kicked up cars, wind, etc. A long time. I'm happy with a 10 HP loss for the protection it provides the engine.
I'm amazed that this **** crowd will debate which oil filter is the best for filtration till the cows come home and will stick their collective heads in the sand when it comes the most important filter in the car and that's the air filter. If you go back in time, remember cars had air filters way before they had oil filters. In 1955 Chevy had a bypass oil filter that was an option on their V8 engines and didn't have a full flow oil filter as standard equipment until 1956.
