Does anyone have a sleeper cam. Or a realy quiet cam?
If u do. Can u tell me what you think?
Was it worth it?
What else did you upgrade?
Did you add 1.72 or 1.8 rockers?
How does it drive
How is the idle
Performance??
I'd consider my 226/230 115 to be a sleeper cam on an LS3 if you raise the idle to 800 rpms or higher. At 750 it idles very nicely with a touch of lope. Drivability is very good, even on my less than wonderful tune. I have a little bit of bucking when cold, which lasts until the coolant gets over 140*. A real tuner would clean it up.
I don't have a dyno, but it had a nice gain in SOTP. I would have gone slightly bigger if I knew how easy to tame this cam was.
I'll chime in since I have installed a few sleeper cams. In most cases with a sleeper cam you will still raise the idle some. They will not gain the power of some of the other cams out there, but it sure is nice to beat up on the unsuspecting. If you have a custom cam designed for you then there should be no need to go with 1.8 rockers as you can get the lift you need out of the cam instead. A sleeper cam will drive very close to stock. I like to say it takes everything about a stock car and just makes it better.
Generally, a shop will charge you about 10 hrs of labor for a cam install. Most shops list their labor rate from $120-150, so the math is pretty easy (that's just labor). Total out of pocket will probably run you $2000-2500 installed and tuned.
I think the less overlap you have, the more "sleeper-like" it will sound. My 230/234 114+2 cam had 4 degrees of overlap, but you can definately hear the lope at idle (even at 900 RPM).
I do not know if you would call it a sleeper cam, but here are the specs:
(220/224, .581/.581, 113 LSA). My Vet is an 07 Z51 A6 with well over 120,000 miles on it, with over 36,000 miles on this cam. I had to do a cam change due to a bad roller lifter.
I had a sleeper cam in an otherwise bone stock LS2 in my c6 once (before making huge mods). It did everything well on the street. One of the most fun versions of the many stages my c6 has taken over the years.
It was ridiculously snappy and responsive. It was more fun to drive on the street than my 402 was. Midrange and above the 402 would destroy it, but the sleeper cam/stock cube engine was more fun up to 4k rpm or so *on the street* than the 402 was. It would start to flatten out above 5k rpm or so though. I never dyno'd my stock ls2 w/sleeper cam so everything I am describing is purely subjective from my butt dyno.
For reference, I want to say the specs were: ~218/230 -ish, 117lsa and .590 ish lift both sides. It idled super smooth.
Not sure where you are located, but feel free to shoot me a PM if you're interested in a quote. My custom grind sleeper cam may not be dyno queen, but it makes great average power and only gives up peak power over a small rpm range to bigger cams. Of course a good tune plays a part in a cams driveability, but this cam literally drives just like stock. Here's a video of it below... http://www.youtube.com/user/vegaman72#p/u/7/H3hTsHh0nHQ
