Default shifter box shaft wobble

Hey everyone.I just took the cover off my shifter and noticed when I rock the handle back and forth the shaft that connects the shifter box to the trans wobbles left to right and is riding up on the shaft.

this shaft supposed to be bushed to just go front and back or does it go side to side also to allow the proper movement?

I'm not sure I follow this. The shaft back to the trans should move back and forth (along the length of the car) and rotate clockwise and counter-clockwise as well.

The connection that's clamped by the bolt shown here in the red circle should allow zero movement of the tranny shaft on the shifter box shaft. If this is moving then you're gong to have trouble shifting as there will be a disconnect between the shift lever and the trans.

Over time the bushings on the shaft in the shifter box itself will wear which can make shifting less precise but I'd think that it would have to be pretty worn to radically affect actual shifting into gear.

No it's not the bolt it's the rod or shaft comes out of the box that gets bolted to that is going side to side.

Red part or orange part?

If it's the red part and the movement in question is not either rotation or sliding back and forth, then you need a new box. If it's the orange part then that thing has a bit of free motion in it just due to its length.

If it's the red shaft, then the bushing(s) are shot and you will need to buy a new shifter box. You can't buy the bushings. Gene sells them at GM parts house for around $130 or so. While you're at it you might consider also installing an MGW short shifter - makes a lot of difference.

The shifter box might be but I'd sure not want to have the MGW in place when I took it in to ask them
