Default Having problem getting crank pulley bolt off...

I have an A4 and cannot get this flywheel locked to remove this crank pulley and need some help. I bought the Jegs tool which looks like this:

So I removed the starter but as you can see here;
http://imgur.com/a/kDvVh#zG63g

There is no room for that tool to work. HOW in the world do i get this flywheel locked? Its been 2.5 weeks now where all I have left to do is remove this stupid bolt so I can continue! Any help would be appreciated.

That's cuz what you have is a flywheel turner, you need a flywheel holder, This is the kent Moore tool for the LS

http://www.toolsource.com/flywheel-h...rceid=googleps

or some air tools

back when, we used to use a long breaker bar and wedge it against the frame or ground and bump the engine over.

If you remove the rubber plug on bell housing you can actually put a very LARGE open end wrench in and hold the motor
Motorhead47 on forum can tell you the size of wrench as it is real big

Default i used 2 screw drivers

I have a manual but I pulled the starter and slid 2 screwdrivers into the fly wheel. 1 at the top hole and 1 at the bottom hole left by the starter. It had about 1/2 play from side to side. If you have time order the balancer install bolt from byunspeed $50 it was a lifesaver when I did my cam swap.

good luck

Tom

If you have an A4 or A6, the easiest way to hold the crank is by putting a 2 1/4" BFW on this coupler inside the bell housing. Fits perfectly on one of the four flats. No need to pull the starter. Just pop the rubber plug on the bottom of the bellhousing and you are looking at the coupler.

Forgive my ignorance, but is BFW a box wrench?

...Big...Freckin'...Wrench...not in everyone's everyday toolbox. You can buy a set of 4 jumbo combo wrenches at Harbor Freight (Item # 1965) or you can go down to the local NAPA and pay more for just the single 2 1/4" combo wrench.

I keep my "BFW" right next to my "BFH" 4lb hammer

oh lol. So that just hooks around the coupling and wedges the wrench against the housing?

Could also try wrapping the serpentine belt around the balancer and water pump. If you do a search there is a thread with a picture

If you have a manual transmission, there's nothing special required other than putting the shifter in 4th gear, set the e-brake as tight as you can and get a huge prybar to break the bolt loose.

A6/A4 guys--MH-47 has the best suggestion out there.

Good luck!

God I hate my life. I got the BFW but I don't have enough ****ing clearance! I have the front end jacked up as high as it will go and still no go! ARGH, does anybody have the kent moore tool I can borrow if I pay for shipping? I really don't want to drop 85$ for this thing if I can avoid it. Going to return these BFW to Harbor Freight tomorrow. BAH!

Did you try wrapping the belt around water pump and crank pulley?

no because I have removed the water pump.....but it seems I can put it back on and do this method or use a prybar. Problem is, I don't know where to jam the prybar. I removed the little window above the oil filter and I just don't know where to jam it. I am pretty **** and OCD and am afraid I'm going to break something by doing this because I don't know exactly where to jam it.

Agreed, don't take the spanners back, buy an angle grinder. HF usually have them for 20 bucks or so. The way this is going for you though be careful you don't cut your arm off

I can sense your frustration, been in similar corners too many times!

Good luck

I used a BFPB to get my headers out of the way when putting my heads on. I've accumulated a few BF tools over the years. Very handy. I have a 6 foot HF digging stick for really big pry jobs.

OP, if you can't cut the BFW, can you get a BF crescent wrench in there? I've got a large, but short, crescent wrench. Should hold once it jams up. Or use my favorite tool, the hot wrench, to cut the BFW if you've got one.

You could also put some wood on your jack to get it up higher. I've done silly things like that (and more) to get the job done back in high school.

Thank you guys for the advice. I almost feel I should of just spent the 85$ to get the stupid kent moore tool. I have no way to cut the BFW. People keep telling me to use a prybar. I have a 7" wonder bar (pry bar) I've popped the window off on the housing I just don't know where to jam it. I'm going to have my friend turn the crank a little so I can see what is going on in there and I guess just wedge this thing in there. I really do believe I am going to break something.

If you don't have a hack saw and a pair of vise grips, could you take your BFW by a machine shop, muffler shop, or just about any mechanical shop to get it cut to fit? Might be able to get it done for a six pack of good beer.

I wouldn't just jam a wonder bar indiscriminately into your torque tube. Those parts are expensive if you break them.

If I was you I'd either raise the car higher using some wood on the jack or bite the bullet and get the right tool. You never know, perhaps Autozone rents them, they do rent a lot of tools.
