Default CAI questions

I have an 08 coupe LS3 with only exhaust mods. used for street driving only.
I have read many threads on CAI...from what I can tell the existing intake system is quite good. I believe that a beehive will keep things cool enough when I am stopped at a light.
My dealer wants over $250.00 for a stock inlet filter.
Because of this I was thinking of spending a few hundread more and look at other intake filter systems. I don't want to start a heated discussion about filters, but my choice is a good NON-OIL filter.
My question is, what are my options on CAIs that do not use an oiled filter media? Quality is more important than price for me.

You should be able to get a stock filter for under a $100. The dealer is ripping you off.
I do not know of any aftermarket systems that has a dry filter. Maybe someone else will chime in with more info.

A CAI by definition (Cold Air Intake) requires fresh air to the filter, if the filter doesn't require cutting the shroud or ducting fresh air to the filter it's not a CAI. If all you are changing is the filter you don't have a CAI.

All the aftermarket filters I've seen are the oiled type.

Thanks for the input.
I do understand the definition of CAI. I would be willing to do some cutting for the right system. I don't think that my daily driving would benifit from a ram air system...but cold air intake can't hurt.
I am also worried about the MAF sensor issues that I have read about.

Just prop open the shroud on your stock intake and call it a day...feeds outside air to your intake, making it a CAI, by definition.

Buy a new filter for your intake from partstaxi.com and save loads of money versus what your dealer is trying to rip you off for.

be careful of popping the shroud as it can cause turbulence across the MAF causing surging and throwing codes.

The only aftermarket company that I'm aware of that offers a non oiled filter is the Volant http://www.volant.com/ and they offer the Donaldson PowerCore element for their C6 CAI.

BTW, the stock OE filter will last for 50,000+ miles in normal driving. A new filter doesn't filter quite as well as one with a few miles on it. You can pickup used OE Donaldson filters on this board that have less the 10,000(many even less then that) for a very good price.

I believe the Airaid comes in oiled and nonoiled versions.
