Default Automatic and HP

Built street rods and drag racers when I was growing up but the world has chgd since then. Question: How much horse power can the 6 speed automatic (Base 07 vette) handle? Fried a powerglide after replacing heads on my '55 once Seriously I'd like to give some thought to a cam but not sure what she can handle. Any of you techies have a thought/recommend?

Be patient for responses, this is an often discussed subject. Just to get you started, very "generally speaking", 500 rwhp is pretty safe on an A6 street car. Of course going to the drag strip every weekend with slicks will adversely affect that. Some here maintain 550+ is okay too, but I think that's pushing it too much.

Again be patient for responses from members who have done mods. Here's some reading for you while waiting.

At 571rwhp/505rwtq I started running into issues fairly quickly. After around 8k miles with that setup, my transmission started having issues shifting from 3rd to 4th and 4th into 5th.

I had Circle D rebuild my transmission with all their offered goodies, plus their triple disc torque converter. I sent this to Stephen@East Texas Muscle Cars:
Well from when I talked to Circle D, they said they're running 1000hp through their new billet intermediate shaft which enabled them to develop a "Super Clutch Pack" of 8 extra wide frictions. Their shaft was designed to allow them to use the extra wide clutch pack which are twice the width of the Alto pack they said. Circle D also heli-arc welds 1-2-3-4 and 3-5-R shafts, replaces the filters with ones that have larger openings, modifies the pump and valve body for pressure control, and they said they'd want the transmission tune so they can help point out any optimizations they've found and assist in making the build last.
This is what he said in response, which makes perfect sense:
No matter what you do to the 6l80 they will not warranty it past about 600 RWHP cause when it comes down to it all the mods you do to it it will still only hold 600-700 RWHP for a long time. SURE it will hold 1000 HP any trans can for a while but they will wear out alot faster at higher HP.
And then I went with The Drive Shaft Shop's 3.5" HD torque tube & couplers, axle/hub kit and 500M output shafts. Here are a few pictures of my solution:
