I have a 06 ls2 z51 and it's currently under the knife. I'm doing a ls3 h/c/I and all supporting mods and hopefully be hitting around 460+ rwhp. Any how I was wondering some clutch options... I really don't have 600$+ to spend on a clutch/flywheel and was wondering would a z06 clutch would be fine for me.. I know the ls2 clutch wont last to long after my build. I'll be tearing out the rpm transmission and my stock diff for an upgraded 3.90 diff, soon so I figured it'll be a good time to swap the clutch while I'm at it.. So would the z06 with a lighter flywheel be a good option. This is my other option I found... act 6 puck race clutch on my ls2 flywheel? The act clutch is 395$ but the z06 usually I can find fair con diction used clutchs for under 100$ and a f1 prolite flywheel 20lbs for 229$ for a total of $329.... I'm a true noob when it comes to clutches But any of these combos will be better then my stock
I been told the z06 clutch would be a waste of cash and time for my mods... Was told it won't last long.. I don't quite understand there logic. Even if I made 480-500rwhp the stock ls7 makes what 450 rwhp? Gm made these clutch's to last and ranger with his z06 made some very hard 780 passes on his stock clutch and he still has the same one... granite I'll be spraying a 150 shot but not till 3rd to be on safe side.
No doubt the ls7 clutch is a stock Gm piece, but it seems to be a bargain for the quality if you can score an aluminum flywheel to negate the added weight of the stock steel flywheel.
I have see multiple Zs in the 500+ on the stock clutch without any issues. I have also seen a couple Zs making over 600 with FI on the stock clutch. No doubt on borrowed time. The Z clutch holds 525-550 EASY.
Idk at the power level your gonna be at with a 150 on top I would not skimp on the clutch. Go ahead get you a nice one like the ls9x and not have to worry about burning it up.
I have the stock clutch in my LS3 making 503 hp and 430 tq and it's been going strong for awhile now I know when I add the 150 shot to it the clutch will be gone soon but I plan on getting a monster clutch when I do it anyway just my .02 the LS7 clutch should hold up just fine to 500 hp and the 420-440 tq you will be seeing and its really the tq that kills a clutch anyway.
