Default Overheated

I drive my car Out of my GF neighborhood tonight and the dic warned me of the heat level, which was at 258. I shut the car off and let it cool for a couple of hours. When I got back, I was able to drive it home and the temp was normal (200-210). Once I got home I realized the the fans were not on. Has anybody experienced this? Hopefully it is something simple. How do I check what's wrong?

Here's a somewhat common problem.

Thanks Joe. I will check the plug. It looks like the fan plug is on the passengers side that leads to the fans, is that the one?

I've not had to address any issues with the C-6 fans yet so I'm worthless there. I do know there is a fan controller that I've read in here more than once of failures with it though. I know a lot about the C-5 fans but they aren't remotely like the C-6 setup, electrically speaking.

Joe, it looks like my ug is fine. Any other thoughts? I will also check the fuses.

Try unhooking the battery with the door open to "reboot" the car. When my car acts odd I do this. I've done it for Fob issues mostly, but it doesn't hurt anything.

Check the relay to see if it's burned. Likely not.

Turn the car on and turn the AC on and use your multimeter (or test light) to see if the car is commanding the fan to be on (it should with the AC on).

Do you have one of those remote fan control buttons that allows you to turn on your fan anytime with a switch? I had one of those and it failed. When I removed it from the fan connector the fan has worked perfectly since.

I started the car this morning with the AC on to see if the fans would turn on. Nothing!! I am thinking maybe it is the relay or fan control module. I doubt that both fans would die at the same time. Unfortunately, I dont have a volt meter at home so I will have to put it on a flat-bed and take it somewhere to check it out. Hopefully it is nothing too serious. Joe, as you know, my time is pretty precious this time of the year!! I have been giving my truck to my son's nurse to pick him up from school and I have been driving it to work a few times a week (2 miles). So I need the 2 cars. Since Jeremy is closed on the weekend, it will just have to stay until Monday.

By the way, I have done no mods to the cooling system at all. Just the stuff you already know about that have no bearing on the cooling system.

Are you stock on your fan settings? The melting plug was the reason that I left the stock t-stat and fan settings even though I added the E-Force SC. Even down here in Florida I'm not having any temp issues. I don't race the car so I don't worry about trying to gain 3-5 HP by keeping the engine temps down below the stock range.

Sorry it wasn't something simple like the connector.

You only have one fan...and they are very high quality and reliable from what I'm told. I doubt the fan went bad. Maybe the controller but even that would be surprising.

Try jumping out the ran relay?

Also, a multimeter is cheap and an indispensable tool for your box, if you've got a parts store or Home Depot close, you might want to get one.

Since it worked after you let it sit for a while I'm thinking its either a bad relay or electrical connection, not an complete failure.

You can always swap the relay out with another one under the hood to see if it's the relay.

If the fan is working intermittenly (you stated it didn't work then it worked after cooling) it's more than likely a bad connection/short.

The first thing I would check (after checking the fuse) is the fan plug connection. Separate the connection and clean the pins, make sure they are pushed in all the way etc. Sometimes crap can build up in there as there is a lot of air/debri that passes in that location. Also, follow the route of the wiring to see if it could be pinched or the sheath is cracked and shorting somewhere.

Default Problem or not?

So today I decide I am going to try to see if I can figure out what is wrong. Once again, I unplugged the fan to check the connection and it looked fine.

I pulled the fuse and tested it with a multimeter (I bought one - $12 at Walmart) and the fuse was fine. I plugged everything back in and started the car. It was idling for 15++ minutes and the temperature held between 208-210. (And the fan started roaring when it hit 200).

So here is the question...

Intermittent connection? Relay? Any help or thoughts on the matter would be appreciated.

I will drive it to work tomorrow and see what happens!

You either had a poor connection or there is still a portion of the wire that's not yet burned up. Keep your DIC set to coolant temp and a constant eye on it. If it gets hot again due to the fan not operating, you'll know its the connector.

BTW, driving it at 30+ MPH with the heater running full blast will cool it off quickly. The stopping is where it heats up too much.
