A simple oil drain plug gasket used as a shim under the detent spring on the passenger side of the transmission has made my 08 Z06 one of the best shifting cars I've driven. With the need to hold the lever hard enough to keep it from going into the center gate gone it slips easily into 2nd and all other gears.
That is it exactly. This has no effect on the effort required to move the shifter fore and aft but decreases the effort required to move the shifter lateral into the 1-2 and 5-6-R gates. My goal was to make the effort equal in all directions and this modification did it.
Funny, most of the guys who complain about the shifter claim it doesn't have enough centering force. The aftermarket shifters have springs that are used to increase that force. The transmission on my 08Z can be shifted with my finger tips and the heel of my hand. I can row through the gears just by rocking my hand back and forth with little to no arm movement.

Check,
My shifter was much stiffer than those I've used in higher mileage cars. There was no way only finger tips could have gotten into the 1-2 gate.
Just ordered an MGW, look forward to using the springs to equalize the effort needed to get into both lateral gates.
Man easier said then done, on my 07 with 3" exhaust and there is a hard line running right along the top. Gonna have to do it on a lift, no way lying under the car.
