Default Going to tuner, quick question

I have a quick ? for all you super smart people on this forum. Installing a FAST 102 this spring and need to go get a retune after. My question is this. What is the better gas to run for tuning purposes? And what would make more power? 91 oct full gas (no ethanol) or 93 oct E-10 (10% ethanol)? I am able to get both where I live. I know on the stock tune the 91 full gas is the way to go, but seemings its getting tuned, would the 93 E-10 be the better choice? Would that allow for more timing? During the last tune, my tuner said the car kept pulling timing, so was wondering what gas is better for my retune. Car is a 2007 ls2 6 speed. with vararam, lg 1 3/4 superpros, underdrive pulley and cat back w/ported 102. Also has MSD plug wires and tr6 plugs due to tuner recomendation. Thanks!

PS If I do end up using 93, what will happen if I run into a situation where I can only put 91 in it? Would that be bad or will the computer adjust for this? I also posted this in the scan and tune section, but want to see what this section has to offer for responses.

Unless your car is a strictly track car,, run what ever you fill it up with every day. If you tune it with 101 race fuel, it will never run to its full potential unless you run 101.

The cost of fuel theses days have the tuner tune it what you normally run. Its probably pulling timing because it could be running an incorrect AFR due to the VARARAM.

With the correct PE AFR,, I bet that he can increase timing..

What ever he does,, your car will run a LOT better after the tune..

If you go some where where is less than desirable fuel quality, your PCM will adjust and if necessary drop down to the LOW OCTANE fuel timing tables. It should run fine but will just have less power during that time.

Bill thanks for the reply. Its good to know that the computer will adjust to whatever fuel I do run. Its not a track only car, but I do like to take it out on the weekends and run it hard. Also take it to the strip a few times a year. What type of fuel would you tune it for if you had the ability to get both. 91 full gas or 93 E-10? Thanks, Cory

We don't have the E10 stuff where I live so I don't know too much about it. If it were me,, I would run what ever I would normally use and what has the best availability.

You also have to understand that the weather/temp that you driving the car in right now you could probably use mid premium and it wouldn't matter.

So run the 91 and in the SUMMER when the heat and the humidity make the car need more octane, you can run more. Run your concerns by your tuner and see what he says. He may have a different idea or be able to explain what you should do better than me.

K thanks again I will ask him when the time comes. In the meantime anyone else have more advice or run into the same situation that I am in?

I've got pretty much the same mods as you on my LS2 and run it with 91 plus Lucas octane booster all the time (tuner recommended); Can't get 93 in CA. When I had it tuned it was with the Lucas in the tank.

Hmm interesting. I had a guy tell me that just yesterday about the octane booster, but I was under the impression that the octane booster you buy at the store was garbage. Is the Lucas product better? Or any other comparable blend?

PS did the booster seem to help? And if so, how much Thanks!

It helped a lot. Before I used it my dyno results were showing timing pulls intermittenly at various rpms which my tuner said were caused by detonation (pinging). I guess LS2's have some history of this problem. My tuner said the local fuels here in CA are really poor and I should be running Lucas to counter the problem and also to run a colder plug. So, after going to TR6's and the lucas I did another tune a couple of months later and the timing pulls were almost completely eliminated. There stil was a small one at about 5000rpm, but nothing overly detrimental. So, I now buy Lucas by the case through Amazon.com and put it in with every tankful. It adds about 3 bucks to each fillup, but I figure that's a small price for the payoff returned.

Wow that sounds almost identical to my problems when I took mine to get a tune and he asked if I had bad gas in it, and I didnt, just could only get 91 where I filled up b4 the tune.....
So after you add the lucas, about what octane do you think that makes the 91 u put in ur car? 92 or 93? Thanks!

I have no idea and I don't really care what the number is, the only thing I care about is that the timing pulls are mostly gone and my last tune after adding a ported 102 and American Racing Headers was terrific.
