*dreaded "service column lock"
If you end up having to replace SCL components there are two. The lock mechanism itself, itro 300 bucks i think and the SCL control module itro 150 bucks.
I'll pass on what I know. The dealer and manual will tell you that to replace the SCLCM you need to remove the dash panel. You do not, it can be accessed through the IP cluster. This saves about 10 hours of labour.
This really is not a difficult job if you approach it methodically. Somebody wrote an excellent piece on here of how to remove the wheel etc. Don't be scared of doing it yourself if you like a bit of DIY. All bits are plug and play.
The dealers will totally have your eyes out if you get them to do the work. They will also probably make a hash of it, damaging trim etc. Do it yourself and do it right.
I've seen this message twice now in my 12 months of C6 ownership. The forum and dealers all jumped on the SCL mechanism, HOWEVER, it wasn't this in either case. 1st time was battery, 2nd time was switch on transmission. Definately diagnose the problem correctly. Yours does sound classic SCL though.
I agree that this outlay is not a welcome surprise but given how well we know to do this job and given that it rarely strands people can we downgrade this from "dreaded" to "dissapointed?"

It's not the end of the world on a serious sports car to have to shell out a few hundred dollars here and there. We know chevy scrimped and scraped on the RnD of this component, they know it too hence why it was removed.
Ultimately if you replace it you'll probably get another 7 wonderful years before you have to do it again.
Good luck.
