Default Overheating issue C6

I have a 2008 Chevrolet corvette ls3 and I'm about 99% sure I have a cooling fan issue. When going 50 or over, there is no overheating at all, but when at a stand still my coolant temperature will steadily go up. I checked the radiator to see of there was anything blocking it and there was nothing. The thing I'm confused about though is that. I started my car maybe three times, and waited for it to get to about 220 before I shut it off, and for some reason the second time the fan decided to magically work so it didn't reach the 220 it stayed at 196...is this a fan issue a wiring to the fan issue? Anyone had similar problems?

Of course the temp goes up when your not moving. No air is going through the radiator. 220 is not out of the norm and I think the fan is programmed to come on higher than that. Not sure of the number. It doesnt sound to me like you got a problem.

Forgive me for not mentioning this but this all started by my car heating to well over 260 and my reduce engine power message came on, my engine coolant overheating light came on all while in traffic and it has done it twice but only while in traffic. Those times I shut it off at 220 just so it wouldn't overheat like that again. But like I said radiator fan only comes on sometimes, or it will not come on at all and let the engine overheat till the messages all come on again

I just had the same issue so I disconnected the plug to the fan and cleaned the contacts and that solved that for now. MY fan wasnt coming on at all so I guess the contacts got dirty and once I cleaned them the fans come on now. I used MAF cleaner which is just contact cleaner. SOmeone else suggested putting some electric grease on the contacts to prevent them from corroding.

Also check plug to see if its ben burnt or smells like its been burnt.

Thankyou sir I have taken off and wiped the wire a little bit, the one connected to the metal box by the fan, and it seemed to work, but I will go get some of that maf spray tomorrow, I'm assuming my local autozone would have it? And did you spray the wire that's actually on the fan itself, or the wire on the metal box by the fan?

I just sprayed the contacts of the connectors when taken apart. For me this is the connector down by the fan on the passenger side. Im assuming this is the fan connector but I just seperate the connector and sprayed both ends. All worked fine now so I guess it helped.

There have been reports of the fan controller having issues and wires melting, relay contacts melting and so on.

sounds like a typical fried harness symptoms. check the connector and see if the contacts have melted,,,,its the weak link in the electronics that control the fan

My problem seems to come and go so I think the controller might be going. I put a mutimeter to the top plug and the far right pin read 12.7 volts and the middle read 0 and the far left read like .4v Not sure what they should read but one is getting good voltage.

I haven't looked for it yet on mine but I understand its very close to one of the fans. I would assume the fan wiring goes straight to it. I'm sorry that I don't have an exact answer for you. I'm still learning the C-6

The coolant temp shouldn't keep going up if the fan is working properly. This isn't the 1960's anymore -- temperature control is much more precise. The stock C6 fan table turns the fan on at %15 at 199 degrees. At 220 it should be at 74% of max speed.

Yep..... I'd recommend unplugging the connector at the fan controller and checking it out.

my plugs look good so I think the controller is starting to go so I am taking it to the dealer to see if they can check it out but Im just over 36K miles so they may not warranty it plus I have a tune. Have to see how much a controller costs and probably replace it myself. Thanks I think from your description its the box kinda to the right and at the bottom of the fan?

so has anyone upgraded their radiator and did it lower the temps any on avg? If so what is a good company to get one thru? If i have to replace the fan controller It looks like I will be taking alot of stuff off, not sur eif the bumper has to come off but if so then might as well as upgrade the radiator too.

It should be really easy to change. Book time on it is only 0.4 hours. Not a great pic, but here you go:

If you don't have any gross engine mods, the OEM radiator has sufficient heat exchange capacity. If the connector is OK, reprogramming the fan, with a 160 stat, will lower the operating temps.

Cool, now I know where the controller is! Most of my knowledge is on the C-5's but learning like everyone else.

Took car to dealer and they used some kit to fix the connector, it didnt work as I had to bring it back so they are replacing the connectors. Even tho they werent burnt and had proper voltage readings they werent making good contact and the kit didnt help so they will replace them under warranty even tho Im right at the 36,400 mile mark. And they gave me a rental to boot while I wait. Got lucky.

Oh and they adjusted the top, saying they can adjust some pins to re align the top so it wont creak as much. It did help quite a bit so far but still have some but not as much creaking.
