Default 2011 GS Front Brake Issue

I recently picked up a 2011 Grand Sport with 14K miles. I know the owner, and the car is bone stock, only had fluid maintenance when needed.

I noticed the two front brake rotors have a small area on the lower face that is either not getting pad contact or something like the guide pins are hitting and scratching. There is no noise, no vibration, brakes work fine.

Has anyone seen something like this?

Haven't seen that.

I guess the cheap and easy first test would be to do several hard stops to "bed" in the brakes. Other than that, I'd pull the pads and see if they are wearing strangely or contaminated with something.

I think that's normal. I don't believe the pads actually cover the entire surface area of the rotors.

Glad to hear you're back in a Vette.

Yes, it's perfectly normal. There are "chrome covers" or other colors available from vendors if you like them.

Sorry guys, I agree with smonska....it's not normal. Look at any other front rotor on a Z06 or GS. The fire path should be clean right to the painted hub area; no rust, no scores, no raised area.

Ill have it apart this week and let you know, thought someone else might have seen it.

Looks to me like you just washed it and only moved it a little? That's how mine look after I wash it. After a drive it a while it looks normal.

Something is amiss.

Looks like the pads are not touching the rotor the full surface area.

Does the car have stock pads?

Looks like you have aftermarket pads man; probably one-piece ceramics. I didn't know they cover a lot less area than stockers, and that's why I won't switch to those. But many owners change to those because they dust less. Get a wheel off and investigate what you have, and post results. Good luck.

No, buddy...that's after 250 miles of driving and a re-bed procedure. The guy I got the car from (who is someone I know and trust) is the original owner and swears nothing was ever changed on the brake system. My thought was the front pads were changed and they were aftermarket or something, as both front wheels are showing the exact same wear pattern, while the rears are completely fine and normal....and the brake dust is more of a reddish or clay color, not black. I've never seen anything like this either...and you know how long Ive been around

I'll get it up in the air later this week.

Huh. That's odd then. I will say, those wheels are CLEAN CLEAN after 250 miles, even the lug holes. Of course I'd expect no less from you pal!

That's not normal. My GS never looks like that but I've never come across this problem on those brakes so without taking it apart I couldn't tell you exactly what's causing it. I'd say bring it to a dealer, they should be able to help you.

is there any chance in hell somehow this car got a set of standard drilled rotors installed on the front at the factory by mistake? those are a bit smaller in circumference

My rear rotors look about like this and my fronts have a thin (1/8") wide area of non-contact. But the PO of my car replaced the stock brakes/rotors with Centric Premium cross drilled and plated rotors and Hawk HPS ceramic pads.

2008 Coupe.

Wow...$150 delivered for ceramic pads at all 4 wheels is a great deal. See post 20.

Ceramics are the only way to fly on the street. They work great for drag racing and even my mile runs...not good for track days though.

Is that for a Z06/GS or a regular Vette? If for a Z06/GS it IS an out of this world deal.

If for a regular Vette I'm going to look for that deal! My ceramic pads have 60,000+ on them now...still look good but I'll have to replace them someday and that is some kind of bargain.

The price is up a little but still great. My pads are still good...but I'm considering putting a set on the shelf.
