I am considering purchasing a higher mileage C6 with the 400/436 engine. Does anyone know the approximate cost of having the engine rebuilt to factory specs, including removal and reinstallation? Thanks

Talk to a few shops...also it is going to depend on what the engine would need. Is it just a ring/bearing job or is it going to need a new crank/rod/piston set?
Could run you $3000 and up depending on the shop and parts required to do so.
Thanks Anthony. The question is rather theoretical at this time as I have not yet selected a particular car. I figure that most of the higher mileage ones have led a pretty hard life and will need engine work sooner or later.
Contact a local mechanic and have him check on a price for a remanufactured engine from Jasper Engine and Transmissions. They have a facility in Willow Springs, MO that is dedicated to GM engines and spit out 60-80 GM engines a day with most being LS series engines. Then have the mechanic quote you a price on R&R of the engine. I know they do some special orders, so have your mechanic ask them about having your engine remanufactured vs using your engine as a core.

The higher mileage cars may be better than the ones with lower miles. A lot of miles usually means the car spent a lot of time on the highway which means the miles were the easiest that could be put on a car. Issues with high mile cars are wear items from people being in the cars all the time and increased road rash from debris on the road. For the same number of operating hours cars driven in urban areas don't rack up the miles due to traveling at half speed or less of a car that sees mostly highway miles.
There are plenty of people in the C5 section reporting excellent durability of C5s with some cars having upwards of 300K miles on them. Older C6s are starting to see mileages in the 200K range. The LS engine series seems to be a worthy successor to the old small block mouse motor.
