Default Instant MPG accuracy check

I headed South toward the border today and while I was down there having fun, I thought I'd better check my MPG reading, in case I needed gas before I got back home.

Kinda give me a little slack for the pic quality. Those damn Mexican roads aren't real smooth.

So does this look about right with the cruise control on? I was expecting a little more at only 3000 RPM.

Yeah, the airbag light is still on.

That'd bother me on jackstands. Like Ferris Bueller's day off.

So just curious now, what does the DIC read on jackstands?

I'm sure you'd have to turn T/C off or else it the motor would just bog. I assume the speedo is reporting information from the front wheel speed sensors, so your instant fuel economy should read 0mpg.

I can assure you this was on the road. While it's possible on jackstands or even on a dyno, the mpg would be a lot higher. It's necessary to have TC off to do a burnout, but the speedometer registers the speed at the transmission. AH needs to know the speed of each wheel independently.

I'm just trying to see the real world relationship of the aerodynamics to the mileage as the speed increases.

Getting 12 MPG at 140 mph really is not bad.

My thought is your posting was a bit tongue-in-cheek due to the high speed at which you were going.

I've noticed my airbag light comes on as well at 130.

This was done on an airstrip rental.

I should have had my instant MPG on the DIC..that would have been interesting!

I can say, since I track each tank of fuel, that particular tank, with 3 180+ runs and a drag strip run on the way home, got 16.34 mpg (including the long drive to/from the air strip) vs. my average at that time of around 19 or so.

I have one tank that I burned completely at Sebring when the car was bone stock, that tank was 8.37 MPG!

While driving along a really flat, straight, deserted road in Florida; I did multiple tests of the mpg at 40, 60, 80 mph. That was on our 2006 and I don't have the numbers any more, but there was a big dropoff in mpg even from 40 to 80.

maybe its because an airbag isn't going to save your life in the event of a crash at over 130. or could be the constant g force on the seat sensors.

I found my instant MPG to read 2 MPG high over the course of 2000 mi.

Tire sizes probably have a bit to do with it...I saw 30 MPG on the DIC for most of the trip. Fuel reciepts reported 28 MPG, with an 80mph ave. speed.

Yup, my DIC average MPG is consistently .75-1.0 MPG optimistic. I keep pretty good records.

Car is a stock 2010.

Oh of course, they are still using the sender at the gearbox. At some point I suspect they won't; one fewer hole to drill.

Actually the VSS reads off a reluctor wheel on the ring gear. It's accessed on the top of the diff.

Here's my expanded diff view, it's on the top.
