I just got a 2007 vette with manual 6spd trans, it seems hard to get into 2nd gear sometimes with moderate acceleration? saw something about a skip shift by-pass? any ideas?
Here's an explanation of the CAGS (Computer Aided Gear Selection) aka skip-shift:
Explanation from Talon90:
The CAGS or computer aided gear selection is a carefully planned routine so that the Corvette does not have to have a gas guzzler tax. The CAGS "skip shift" will close a gate in the transmission so that under certain circumstances the car can only shift from first to fourth. The circumstances.
You must complete the shift into FOURTH (4) to turn off
this feature. This helps you get the best possible fuel
economy.
After shifting to FOURTH (4), you may downshift to a
lower gear if you prefer.
Notice: Forcing the shift lever into any gear except
FOURTH (4) when the 1 TO 4 SHIFT light comes
on may damage the transmission. Shift only from
FIRST (1) to FOURTH (4) when the light comes on.
This light will come on when: • The engine coolant temperature is higher than
169°F (76°C),
• the vehicle is going 15 to 19 mph (24 to 31 km/h) and
• the vehicle 21 percent throttle or less.
The skip shift eliminator is a resistor and a connector setup that plugs in to your transmission under the car and fools the car in to thinking that it has all ready completed the skip shift. Is it worth it, based on materials, no. With that said some feel the need to shift at less than 19 mph rather than hold the shift literally for one additional second to 20 mph and the CAGS routine ends.
Is that what you want or are you looking for the CAGS Eliminator info?
Actually you can shift into 3rd instead of 4th no problem. I haven't got around to getting the CAGS eliminator yet and this is what I do as its slightly less annoying to go 1st to 3rd instead of 4th.
You can also shift outside the parameters described, not have any issues at all and don't have to spend a cent. If you are lazying along in traffic just make sure to shift to second before 15 mph or after 19. Doing it before is usually better. You can train yourself to do it easily. If you aren't paying a lot of attention and get into the CAGS window just move the shifter to third instead.
CAGS Bypass was the first mod I did to my C6. I HATE computer aided gear selection. I prefer to choose which gear I'd like to be in, hence my purchase of a vette with a MANUAL transmission. Cheap to buy and 30 seconds to install...
Hell, buy a diablo sports intune tuner, get more pop in the performance and it eliminates the skip shift. Opened box and had it tuned in 15 minutes, then went out and played, no skipped shifts, lots of fun.
if you or anyone else decide you want a CAGS eliminator I have one laying around I am not using....yours for $20 shipped..
I have an '07 c6 and have been through two CAGS-SKIP fuses - both doing the same thing: Working perfectly as far as shifting is concerned (tranny works as smooth as my old 2:20 Muncie in my '62), BUT ... the engine light comes on and stays on. Can't figure out why that happens. Went back to vendor and they sent me another CAGS-SKIP fuse - same result.
