Default Surge tank

I asked this question on the general discussion and got a yes and a no. Hopefully you tech folks can give me the answer. "Does the antifreeze in the surge tank circulate throughout the system or does it stay in the surge tank until the radiator is low on antifreeze."

maybe i didnt make myself very clear on your other posting in general section. it flows freely (like above said when tstat opens) when water flows in the engine. it does not "stay in the surge tank until the radiator is low" ....
like we said in your post...

doesn't really flow. it just goes up and down with temp and pressure variations. the pressure varies with coolant temp and is limited by the cap

No, it doesn't flow like the main radiator hoses, but there is a constant flow through the tank. It amounts to maybe like 1/8th what flows out of a tap, but it flows.

The 'surge' tank's coolant circulates thru the system for 2 obvious reasons: it has a pressure cap, and 2 hoses connected to it. But the better question is how much, due to the small upper hose. My answer would be this: enough not to worry about it. It won't turn into crap, like it happens over time with surge tanks... which are not pressurized. If you're curious how much it circulates, you can leave the engine running when you get home, pop the hood open, and watch the tank with a flashlight and see if you can tell, but make sure to wait a little so the thermostat opens for sure. Good luck.
