The autolock was probably set by the previous owner as this is not the default from the factory.

Use a good CD/DVD cleaning disc. Pick one up at Best Buy for about $10.00 or your local computer store. Or order from Newegg. Intermittent disc read is usually a dirty lens in the unit. Don't order a new DVD until you have done this, becuase a new DVD is $180.00. However, if it's more than 5 years old, clean the lens AND get a new disc. They do go out of date over 5 years, although they will still get you most places.
