Replacement of the whole differential is what is needed. Apparently the Corvette rear end needs certain tools to rebuild it, different than other differentials.
Check out both mentioned web sites and call to talk.
I went with DTE 4:10's 3 years ago and could not be happier. I got the street stage 2 with upgraded oiling system and carbon clutch packs as well as cold hardened ring and pinion.
My local dealer had my diff apart 1 year after I bought the car. Turned out to be a cracked spyder gear. I became friends with the tech who was working on my car...he did a couple of things for me at his house for a big discount!
If you go the ring and pinion change be sure the shop has experience in corvette rear ends.
When I looked into it only one shop would do it locally and I was not impressed when I stopped by for a visit. So I went with the complete rebuild from DTE.
At the end of the 1/4 you will be in 4th rather than 3rd. Should help out of the hole if launched right.
Much more fun to drive on the streets. Lost a few mpg. Although if I drive for fuel economy maybe only 1 1/2 mpg on a trip, as compared with same trip with 3:42's.
6th gear becomes usable for passing at freeway speeds.
Probably my favorite mod other than tint which is a must on all my cars.
Gears help the launch tremendously. You still have to learn to drove but the gears make it a lot easier. Should give you .2 or more in the 60 foot when you learn to launch, assuming you don't already know. If you know, the gears will make it a lot easier.
I have read a few threads on this. Most if not all the speciality corvette shops recommend just replacing the differential. They stated it is very difficult to do just a gear swap. The shops will normally give you an exchange rate for the one that is pulled out of your car.
