Hello all,
I had a shudder and rattle when shifting that was intermittent. So, I thought it was a clutch spring or pressure plate issue (car hooked up good). I ordered the parts and pulled the drivetrain in my garage. I just got the vehicle for a good price and it still has the original clutch (93K), so what the heck.
Opened it up and yes it needs a clutch , but I also noticed that the pilot bearing was frozen and it appears that the torque tube shaft has extensive wear. You can see the worn shaft in my garage - for some reason I can't post pictures??
So, any recommendations/advice on repairing or replacing the torque tube?
For other reasons (shot bearings and rust on both shafts in the torque tube) I wound up replacing everything in the torque tube, except for the casing. Price of that will give you pause.....
If that is all that is wrong, you may be able to get the shaft repaired by a competent machine ship. Thery would weld metal back on, then re-machine the nose of the shaft. I seem to recall that someone had done that in one of the threads in this section. Alternatively, you could just replace that one shaft.....although you may want to replace or upgrade the "six-shooter" coupler at the same time.
Looks like I will have the short shaft repaired by Standard Transmissions.
I can't find a used one for a reasonable price and the dealership numbers are crazy. I will also replace the three bearings while I have it open. The six shooter couplings look good, so i don't plan on changing those.

We had to replace one, I think that little shaft is around $800 bucks. The only thing about a new one is that shaft is hardened. So welding and maching it could be an issue. If that anneal it firs that would work, but it would need to be hardened again. If they fail in this process you could break the shaft. When we weighed everything that could go wrong in fixing one, we ended up buying a new one. If you wold like to email me I can see what our current price from GM is and if I can get a good used one also. jabbott@zip-corvette.com
