I just bought a OEM corvette navigation unit off ebay (wouldn't you know it did not go as smooth as I hoped). The seller failed to mention it was a Japanese model. It seems to power up in my corvette 2008, but the fm channels are set from 76 to 90mhz. From what I have read this is frequencies in Japan. Does anyone know if this unit is still good for me in the USA. Can I take it to the dealer to reprogram? It did not have the issues of theft lock, just does not work in the USA.
yes, USA versions can be reprogrammed for working in foreign (european) countries. that has been proven by several that had taken theirs to those countries. Tech2 at the dealership reprogrammed them.
there should be no reason they cant reprogram it to work here.
p.s. the topics of those in foreign countries reprogramming theirs can be found in search, if you want you could shoot them a PM and ask if they had any trouble explaining to the dealerships what needed to be done.

My unit is programmed in Japan mode right now, I am in the USA. So it would make sense that it can reprogrammed to work here in the USA. I was reading your answer backwards, I think. Is there anything specific that I need to tell the dealership> Thank you for your help.
here is some on your topic. i know its sorta backwards, in they want USA version to be European, but for practical matters, it would get reprogrammed at a dealership to what you require...
above are some that indicate they either had it converted or are aware of someone that did have it done. maybe PM's to them would give you how much explaining to a dealership was required before they believe you.. lol
so, here is an interesting statement then a question.
statement.. it appears the BCM is reprogrammed to the frequency(s) you need for the part of the world your in.
question... did you ever have a nav/radio in your car before?
i ask because it would seem that if you had, the BCM would be programmed correctly for you already, i doubt your actually programming the radio, but i am just guessing. guess you'll find out!
I bought the exact same unit from the same ebay seller. I just bought a 2005 Corvette with Nav that worked perfectly untill the mp3 update "fried" the unit. I bought this as a replacement and found out it was in Japanese. I do have the map disc for the 05 and took pics of the nav menu screens. Very differant than the original unit I had.

some good news.
i was totally unable to locate a Japanese model nav unit. gm doesnt sell them. actually they only sell 2 models for all countries. they will list different ones if they had existed.
you can get Japanese special antenna(s) used for only that country.
you can order a Japanese traffic receiver.
you can get Nav discs in Japanese of course.
as far as a parts list, nothing is sold for a nav except a 'for all countries' ones.
one note, trying to follow some of this topic (2006 i think) it started to appear that the programming using Tech2 to the BCM actually does some programming into the nav unit itself.... http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-c...ow-so-far.html

concerning the question about with and without the right hand white plug... could you post the gm part number thats on the label, on top of the unit, it would help
it appears that the extra white plug matches the units 15791221 where their backs look like the following pic (btw 15791220 is 2007and has steering wheel control added function on the nav, so i wonder if 15791221 does too).....
15820017 is 2006 (MP3 Capability Added) version that has a back like this. 2006 was before the steering wheel added functions...

ChevyDave, the unit with the extra plug is installed in the car. When I get a chance I'll get a pic of that. But here is the labal on my original unit. My car does not have steering wheel control, 05.
Does anyone know if a 2013 oem navigation unit will work in my 2008? I had a member say that he would sell his, but were both uncertain if it would work. Any help would be much appreciated. Does anyone have a nav disc available for sale as well?

you dont have to remove the one you installed , just thought you might have them both out, i was just curious about what number was on the one with the 'extra white plug'. i think if it works, leave well enough alone

Well, unfortunately it didn't work out with it. I removed it and sent it back to the seller. Let him deal with re-flashing it. I did take a pic of the top before I sent it out. Hope it helps somebody.
I am brand new to this site, and brand new to the Corvette world. I just purchased a 2007 Z06, and i love it.
I too purchased one of these "Jpapn locked" Nav units off of ebay as well, but i am not having any luck getting it relocated to North America. I tried using a Tech II at my dealership (they let me use it) but i could not change the location information.
Has anyone actually gotten one of these Japanese units (ending in 1221) working properly? If so, how did you get it to change?

Myself and the gentleman that started this thread have done quite a bit of research and Tech II work too. Neither one of us have been able to change location or language setting. Both of us returned our units. I replaced mine with a pioneer avic z140bh. Love it. Would recommend it to anyone.
