Default Hiting 3rd Gear - 2011 GS

Can only seem to bang 3rd gear 50% of the time during WOT shifting... Anyone else have this issue? , Will an MGW fix the problem? & No I don't use the thumb when I'm tryin to hit third gear!

Should be no problem at all!!!

Dont try to move the shifter laterally. Just put the heel of your hand on the back of the shift **** and shove it straight forward - the spring will take care of moving the lever to the right just the correct amount so you'll hit 3rd every time, no matter how hard and fast you bang it!!

BTW - I've got an MGW in my '06 and LUV it!! I had a B&M in my '05 and liked it very much as well.

However, they shortened up the throw somewhere after '06, because my '09 has a much nicer throw. It's just a street driven car, and I feel no need to put anything else in it.

Just use the ball of your hand and slam it forward - NOT TRYING TO GUIDE IT INTO GEAR. The shifter has a centering spring that will do all the work getting the shifter from 2nd to 3rd. You should not have your fingers touching the shifter at all. Just ram it straight forward.

Now when shifting to a rear gate gear like 2-4-6 you pull straight back with your finger tips. At no point when speed shifting will you ever grab the whole shifter ****. push forward with the ball of your hand for 3rd, and the finger tips back to 2-4-6. This is the way.

Just nudge it forward and you'll never miss it unless your shifter alignment is way off.

I agree with the above and would only add that relaxing a bit is important too. It does not take a huge amount of force to shift into third, even at WOT. Try being a bit more gentle with it.

So you're hitting the rev limiter 50% of the time? You may want to lay off the power shifting until you master it.

Had the same issue with the oem shifter, but not as often as you. I always use the open palm method not forcing the shifter into gear, but still at times would get hung up in 3rd gear at WOT. After 48k miles, I was fed up and installed the MGW shifter. Currently, I have 53k miles and since I installed the MGW shifter I never missed third.

Don't treat the shifter like you are shifting an old fashioned 4 speed. Use a gentle touch. Shift with your finger tips, palm of heel of your hand. Low gear is pull to the left and forward with the palm, second pull to the left and back with the palm, third is forward with the heel of the hand, fourth is pull backwards with the finger tips, fifth is forward and to the right with the palm, 6th is rear ward and to the right with your palm.

Default practice before going to the track

Do not start JAMMING GEARS, if you damage sychros you are gonna get upset. practice in your driveway then practice on the road without bouncing the rev limiter. I have found that just pusing with the palm of my hand & letting the gate guide itself works just fine. An MGW shifter is great, I have one, but it will not take the place of practice.

Yes!! The MGW is one of the best things you can install for performance driving. I've NEVER missed 3rd gear since installing the MGW.

A major portion of missing gears in the clutch, when it's time to swap out your clutch go with a Mantic 9000 twin, the disengagement at WOT is fantastic and the chance of missing gears is drastically lower.

That also causes long term trans damage too btw, maybe people do not put the correlation between the two together.

"easing into shifts" just makes you slower... which is fine on the street, but if your into winning or fast ET's, your clutch is a major part of that equation. Here is a video of of a Mantic clutch on the drag strip, clean-fast-easy shifts.
