I am doing a cam swap Saturday myself and I bought a new timing chain and the after market guide to replace the factory guide. It is one of the black plastic triangle guides. Do I have to mess with the oil pump to remove the old chain guide? If so do I have to shim or adjust anything different for the new guide? Do I need any gaskets or O-rings if I have to remove the oil pump?
You can swap the guide easy enough, 2 bolts. If you remove the oil pump get a new O ring for the pick up. Regardless of what others may say, I always replace the timing cover and water pump gaskets, prevents unforeseen failures. The only gaskets I'll reuse are the intake and valve cover gaskets as long as they have less than 10K miles on them.

I purchased a new timing cover gasket, water pump gaskets, and new timing cover seal, chain, tensioner, and balancer bolt. I have not purchased an oil pump O-ring but I have read you must be careful when installing the pickup tube so you do not cut or roll the new O-ring. The info on the net that I have found so far is it kind of vague on the LS3 oil pump procedures.

It's just an LS, it's the same procedure as any other. Having the O ring slip off and not be seen or cutting it during assembly is common. I use grease to hold it to the pick up and lube the OP was well so they slide together without binding.
I also soak my TC in oil before assembly and I use an ARP crank bolt with blue loctite.

I am not a stranger to building engines and I have built many over the years. I normally build Big block Chevy or stroker 530 Cadillacs for my airboats. These engines have a short life span because of the demands on them. That said this will be my first trip into an LS engine and I learned long ago it is better to ask question. Pride is what makes a man drive in circles because he will not ask for directions. This forum is full of knowledgable people like yourself and only a fool would pass up the free advise. Thank you very much for the advise it is greatly appreciated. I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas, I am excited about my first hands on venture into the LS engine.
