The Chevy dealer where I bought my car has recommended replacing one front sway bar link and both rear links. The car is a base model coupe, 08, which I bought new. It has about 25,000 miles on it. Is this a common repair item for his kind of mileage? I haven't noticed any problems or noises, but I suppose that it could be something that wears gradually so that you don't notice it. If it makes a difference, the car is equipped with the F55 magnetic ride control. There are a lot of less than smooth roads around where I live, so most of the time I'm in touring mode.
It is hard to imagine that the stock endlinks would go bad after only 25k miles, unless those were some seriously hard miles. Have you inspected them yourself, they are pretty easy to see. Is there rust maybe? The rubber torn?
Good thing is, if you do need to replace them they are not that much for stock metal endlinks.
'08 F55 here and I'm on my 4th set of links at 108K miles. The first set died around 30K.
If you replace them, do all 4 at once. They're real easy to change. If you can change a wheel, you can DIY. Tools are 18mm open end wrench and 18mm socket (deep is best, but std will work). Torque to 53 lbs/ft.
Cost should be around $110-120 for all 4.
Front & rear end links replaced on our 2009 Z51 at about 20k miles, cured a "Clunk" I was feeling/hearing during low speed turns (not the diff problem).
I had all four end links replaced on my 08 Z51 coupe within the first 15k miles. At slow speeds, going over speed bumps, up driveways and bumpy roads I would hear a knocking or popping noise. The new end links are redesigned and no issues currently with 55k miles.
I took a look at the sway bar links in the rear and found that the rubber was caked with road dirt and feels like it is pretty well worn, so I don't think that the dealer is trying to take me for a ride. The rears look easy enough to get at that it may be possible to change them with out without even lifting the car.
rears can be done with the car on the ground (however some stacked wood always helps with elbow room)
as others have said, its so easy to do, you might as well diy.
there are numerous versions of endlinks available ranging from 130 bucks a set to 300.
for the factory replacements I suggest going to parts taxi as they are almost always the cheapest sources of gm parts.
for aftermarket links you can either go to ebay and piece together the parts for less than 100 bucks, buy the zip corvette links for 130, get the gm t1 links whick are 200, lg teflon lined for 300, or powergrid (these and the lg are considered the best) for 320.

That's where I buy all my stock parts.
