I recently purchased a 05 z51 stick shift corvette with only 14k miles. I took the car out of town and noticed a problem..... when at a high rpm trying to shift from 2nd to 3rd i will get resistance and a grinding noise where it doesn't want to go into 3rd, but if I shift from 2nd to 3rd at a low rpm around 2.5k I do not encounter this problem. Any ideas what it could be and how I can go about resolving this issue?
No I haven't, I dont know where to start to fix the problem, but ill start by having the fluid changed. Only have owned the car for about a week.
I know it sounds like a no-brainer, but make absolutely sure you are pushing the clutch allllll the way in. Sometimes during a high speed situation, you may not realize you're not fully engaging the clutch. Other than that, although somewhat unlikely, your syncrho could be bad. I recently changed my MZ6 (Z51 optioned car) fluid and it's even smoother now. I've never had the grinding problem unless my clutch wasn't fully engaged during shifts.
my '05 z51 does it if i am trying to shift quickly from 2nd to 3rd as well, like a slight teeth clink.
i think it happens for me when shifting fast under load, not necessarily high rpm.
maybe it's my lack of shifting coordination, although i've been driving stick 24 yrs and have no such problem on my other cars (but all were/are 4 banger baby shiftbox, so can't compare to these t56 rock crushers, lol).
anyway, transmission developed a constant grinding problem at ~100,000 miles, so had to have it rebuilt. shop found a broken ring or something that was causing the constant grinding and it was back to normal after the rebuild.
even with the rebuilt trans it would still clink into 3rd if i try to shift fast, so assume your transmission is fine.
you can read up on the "ranger" shifting method for when you want to shift fast, or just remember not to lightning shift into 3rd to let the synchros do their work easier (no real need unless drag racing at the strip, which i don't do).
