I've had the car since August of 2008. Always kept in the same spot in my garage, no phone chargers in there or anything. Recently I've been having a ton of problems with my fobs. I tried changing the battery in my main fob and still have the same issue (also ended up breaking the plastic on the fob, really hard to open these). Basically I can pull the handle a bunch of times and it never opens. Sometimes if my top is down and I put the fob inside the car and pull it'll work, but it fails alot like that as well. I've now resorted to pulling the fob out of my pocket, hitting the unlock button several times until I see the little LED on the door light up, then getting in and fighting to get the car started.
I've tried putting the fob into the pocket in the glove compartment, but it still has the same issue. I'm thinking it's got to be the unit in the car that's going bad. Is that something I can buy and replace myself? Or do I have to take it to the dealer?
Clean or replace the door contact handle. $15 2 screws and 1 connector. Very easy and cheap to replace. (The spot you place your fingers to get into the car)
I had this problem to the point I was a few days from getting rid of the car, it was very irritating. The dealer installed some new batties for me while I was getting my window trim replaced, no better. They put in panasonic batteries which were not smooth on the back side. As a last ditch effort I installed some energizers I purchased from the home depot and have not had an issue since. Been over six months and both fobs are fine.
If he were getting "No FOB Detected" messages, I'd start to suspect the battery in the FOB and the hatch pattern possibility but, he's not getting that message. If he EVER gets in the car, it seems to start so the FOB is communicating and allowing the engine start.
